One of the other recommended transfers, Bostan Karim, is accused of running al Qaeda’s improvised explosive devices (IED) operations in Khowst, Afghanistan, which targeted US soldiers.
Some of the recommended transfers have also vowed to return to jihad if they are ever released, according to reports from US military officials. They have also threatened to assassinate the U.S. president, kill American citizens, and attack other world leaders who are allied with the West.
Muieen Abdal Sattar, an accused al Qaeda member who fought in Tora Bora, has been at Guantanamo for 14 years and 11 months. While there he has ‘incited mass disturbances, assaulted and threatened to kill [Gitmo] personnel and made motivational speeches to ‘fight against infidels’ and to kill all Americans to include men, women, children, and babies,’ according to US military officials.
Officials claimed he has also issued several ‘fatwas’ encouraging other detainees to engage in hunger strikes and suicide attempts, and once threatened to cut off a guard’s head.
Others have vowed to ‘martyr’ themselves if released, and even while in Guantanamo, according to official military reports. Accused al Qaeda member Mohammed Bawazir reportedly agreed to be ‘a voluntary suicide operative’ in a suicide attack inside Gitmo, planned with two other detainees.
It is unclear where the detainees will be transferred. Obama has previously transferred ‘recommended’ Gitmo detainees to countries that agree to accept them, sending nine prisoners to Saudi Arabia last spring and another to Italy in July.
Some released detainees have gone back into terrorism. Four of the senior leaders in al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) are former Guantanamo Bay detainees that were transferred to Saudi Arabia or Sudan.
After 7 years of trying to close it despite bipartisan opposition, Obama is intent on leaving his successor with the aftermath of yet another mistaken policy.
Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama on Tuesday called for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility after delivering his plan to Congress to achieve a goal that has long eluded his presidency.
The blueprint comes seven years after Obama made an Oval Office vow to permanently shutter the prison for enemy combatants, but it already faces objections from Republicans and legal obstacles they have placed to transferring Guantanamo detainees to U.S. prisons.
The truth is that there isn’t anything wrong with Gitmo. In fact, it is an ideal location to house our nation’s most dangerous foreign combatants. It is isolated and secure. The problem liberals have with it is the fact that we’re holding Gitmo detainees at all. Even though Obama has released a lot of dangerous people and intends to release some more under this plan, he still wants to keep the most dangerous in custody, but move them into prisons in the homeland where they are less isolated. What is solved by that? nothing. All it does is make them a little less secure and a little less isolated.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it’s the end of the world if we stop housing terrorists at Gitmo. I’m sure we can keep them fairly secure in other facilities. There just isn’t any good reason to move them from a facility that is already secure. Why risk it when Gitmo is working just fine? Does anyone seriously think that closing Gitmo will buy America any goodwill with the Islamic terrorists who want to kill us?
Obama’s plan has nothing to do with security and everything to do with feelgood liberalism.
Consider the breathtaking lawlessness and arrogance of Obama.
Staring down his final year in office, President Obama vowed Friday to give Congress one last chance to approve legislation to shut down the notorious prison for suspected terrorists at Guantánamo Bay before he looks at executive actions to close the facility.
Congress has acted on Guantanamo Bay. They have said that it must continue to act as a prison for foreign combatants. Obama’s job, as the leader of the executive branch of government, is to execute the will of the American people as expressed through their duly elected representatives in Congress.
Instead, Obama is threatening to ignore the American people and lawlessly act to close Guantanamo Bay. Whether you want Guantanamo Bay to remain a prison or not, this is not the way for our federal government to function.
Because his campaign promises are more important than the folks being killed by these former detainees.
Washington (AFP) – US President Barack Obama has vowed to push ahead with plans to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects, despite evidence that a substantial number of former detainees have returned to the battlefield.
In an interview with Yahoo News that was published Monday, Obama said the strategic benefits of closing the notorious facility outweighed incidents of recidivism among “low-level” former inmates.
The White House itself admits that around 10 percent of those released from Guantanamo have resumed fighting for Islamic extremist organizations, but says it is more important to shutter a facility that has become a recruiting tool for militants.
What a load of bull. Does anyone seriously think that “GITMO!” is the rallying cry of the violent Islamist movement?
