China Threatens US Over Rare Earth Metals

It is not impossible, but it is very difficult to win a trade war against a totalitarian regime. Their leaders can withstand decades of a down economy because they never have to stand for election. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try for vbetter terms and look for alternative trade partners. China only controls about a third of the known rare earth metal deposits, but that’s mainly because they are willing to take on the high cost and negative environmental consequences to mine them. If China pulls back, it opens the market for other countries to get in. Unfortunately, that will take years.

A Chinese state-run newspaper has warned the U.S. not to underestimate Beijing’s capabilities with its resources of rare earth minerals during a trade war between the two countries.

People’s Daily, the mouthpiece of China‘s ruling Communist Party, hinted serious consequences to the Trump Administration using a diplomatic term usually reserved by Beijing to signal the start of an armed warfare.

‘Don’t say we didn’t warn you!’ The newspaper said in a commentary today as it commented on the possibility of China suspending its exports of rare earths to the U.S.

Or a trade war against a supply chain that would take decades to replace.

But hey, he’s a very stable genius, and everyone knows it!  And you voted for him!

  2. Owen

Actually, I didn’t vote for him, but I would now.

O RLY?  What changed your mind?

  4. Pat

    jjf, one word. Judges.

That’s certainly part of it. Tax cuts. Deregulation. Foreign policy (mostly). Environmental policy. Robust pro-capitalism, pro-American. Border policy. There are certainly things I disagree with him like tariffs, communication style, and general buffoonery, but taken as a whole he’s been good on the issues I care about.

Actually, there are ‘rare earths’ here in the US.  Molycorp was doing well with them until it went BK in 2015.  What was the cause of the BK?

Red China’s market manipulation–which was done specifically to take Molycorp out of the business.  Not that Molycorp was run by the best and brightest–they missed a signal–but the place still exists.

“Environmental policy”, you say??  And what policy might that be?  45 has been all over the board on policy, but mainly has appointed a bunch of grifters and con artists.  Maybe we should have expected that.

But check out the stories about how EPA over ruled the scientists and health professionals on the air permit for foxconn ..

US is still playing the long game…buying cheap minerals from short game countries like China. Good good.

Trump will win this one, just like all of his other wins. In spite of that, media will tell everyone he screwed up again. He told everyone this wouldn’t be easy, but it has to happen and eventually it will.

“just like all of his other wins”.

You mean like the new health care plan, Mexico paying for the wall, tariffs, NAFTA, immigration reform, infrastructure, etc?

If you want to act like you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re simply in denial like all the other drive-by fed liberal sheep. The last I read, his meaningful accomplishments were over 275 different things (I read the entire list) and counting. I refuse to drop down to your level to discuss specifics. If you dont’t get it by now, you never will.

    g:

Yup, those tariffs are sure helping farmers, but since the taxpayers get to bail them out (again), it’s a win, right?  Manufacturers that use steel and aluminum are enjoying paying higher $$ for materials as well.  And folks hit by major disasters are really appreciative of that extra roll of paper towels.

Maybe “win” means something else where you live.

    Mike,

Would you provide a link for the list of 275 accomplishments please. Thanks.

Yup, pretty much the End of the World, as LeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeRoy would have us believe.

But no matter how many times LeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeRoy votes in 2020, Trump will still be the President.  And if the damnfool Democrats run an impeachment circus, the House is likely to go (R) again, but this time with actual men, not mice like Ryno.

    Pat,

Here’s a link to a Washington Examiner article citing 289 accomplisments. Granted, they weren’t all necessarily life-changing, but he has definitely been busy versus all the haters who can’t seem to do anything constructive for this country. Searching on Google for Trump accomplisments quickly provides endless references.
