Iranians Dying From Drinking Methanol to Cure Covid

Sad.

Iranian media report nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 1,000 sickened so far by ingesting methanol across the Islamic Republic, where drinking alcohol is banned and where those who do rely on bootleggers. An Iranian doctor helping the country’s Health Ministry told The Associated Press on Friday the problem was even greater, giving a death toll of around 480 with 2,850 people sickened.

The poisonings come as fake remedies spread across social media in Iran, where people remain deeply suspicious of the government after it downplayed the crisis for days before it overwhelmed the country.

“Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic. But we are fighting on two fronts here,” said Dr. Hossein Hassanian, an adviser to Iran’s Health Ministry who gave the higher figures to the AP. “We have to both cure the people with alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”

Well, to our local liberals, it must be Trumps fault.

  2. Jason

My thoughts exactly Mar.  Our dummies here have no concept of personal responsibility.

  3. Kevin Scheunemann

Iran is what happens when false religion like Islam, Climate Change, or godless liberal intersectional cults run a country.

  4. jjf

Mar, hear me out.  If Trump had said “methanol is a cure” then maybe there would be a case for that.

  5. Kevin Scheunemann

    Jjf,

Trump didn’t make case for fish tank cleaner as a cure either but that didn’t make difference to disgusting liberals and their media cohorts to blame Trump for those Gumps that did it.

  6. jjf

The drugs he touted are indeed dangerous.  Maybe not tank cleaner, but he’s pushing drugs that haven’t been tested for that purpose.  You should base treatments on proven efficacy and not give false hope.  But the Big Orange Cheeeto said something, so you reflexively defend it.  Such rugged individualism!

  7. Jason

    >But the Big Orange Cheeeto said something, so you reflexively defend it.  Such rugged individualism!

Pretty sure your reflexive attack was faster.

    >but he’s pushing drugs that haven’t been tested for that purpose.

And yet he never “pushed” them.   He didn’t say “Take this and report back to me how it works”.   Good reflexes there jiffypop

  8. Kevin Scheunemann

    Jjf,

He was not pushing drugs, but indicating drugs that showed promise

Are you constantly this much of a disingenuous twirp to the facts?

  9. Mar

Again, jjf, you are wrong. Hydroxychloroquine can be only given by prescription. So, if it is being used, which it is, it is being prescribed by some of the brightest people on Earth, doctors.
It cannot be bought over the counter by anyone.
    So, again, you are wrong.

  10. Pat

What I wish would happen is to let someone who can put two sentences together conduct the briefing, and let the people who know the facts, give the facts. But Trumps ego won’t allow it.

  11. Mar

President Trump is doing a good job at the press conference. The one thing I dont like is the people give him gratuitous praise.
At least Trump is up there instead of Biden, if anyone remembers him, who really cannot put an intelligent speech together.

  12. Pat

    Trump just tweeted:
“Because the “Ratings” of my News Conferences etc. are so high, “Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers” according to the @nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY. “Trump is reaching too many people, we must stop him.” said one lunatic. See you at 5:00 P.M.!“

The lunatic thinks this is a reality show!
The reason people tune in is because there is a crisis going on and are looking for information.

  13. Le Roi du Nord

If folks are getting a Rx for hydroxychloroquine for use against covid 19 it is being done without  any legitimate studies that prove it to be effective.  For trump to have mentioned it all was at best giving folks false hope, and at worst causing harm to those gullible enough to listen to him.  If not for smart folks like Fauci we could be in a much more serious situation.   trump should keep his mouth shut and let folks that know the business do the talking.

  14. Pat

Trump tweets about his ratings while Dr. Fauci talks about 100,000 – 200,000 deaths.
    Trump’s priorities are about Trump.

  15. Le Roi du Nord

From Gov. Inslee earlier this month:
“I just received a call from @VP Mike Pence, thanking Washington state for our efforts to combat the coronavirus,” Inslee tweeted. “I told him our work would be more successful if the Trump administration stuck to the science and told the truth.”
And then trump referred to Inslee as a “snake”.  Obviously no room for science and truth in the trump administration.

  16. dad29

The reason people tune in is because there is a crisis going on and are looking for information.

You are correct!!  They will get information, not Fake News BullRoar spread around by the usual suspects.

  17. dad29

at worst causing harm to those gullible enough to listen to him

Sure, because ANYONE can write a prescription, right, LeeeeeeeeeeeeRoy?  Just take your script-pad, scribble whatever you want on it, sign it, and take it to your drugstore.

    Sheesh.

  18. dad29

Inslee tweeted. “I told him our work would be more successful if the Trump administration stuck to the science and told the truth.”

Inslee is NOT a snake.  He’s a petulant slimebucket.

  19. Le Roi du Nord

No dud, you can just go guzzle fish tank cleaner. Do you think those folks thought of that on their own, or were influenced by trumps misinformation?

  20. dad29

Those folks did not “think.”  The big ORANGE LABEL THAT SAYS “POISON” is only useful for thinkers.

And despite your fantasies, Trump did not say “Go, eat fish-tank cleaner.”

Stop using DNC adverts as your information sources, LeeeeeeeeeRoy.  You don’t look good when you do that.

  21. Le Roi du Nord

Sure dud, being truthful and sticking to the science makes you  slimebucket ?  Where do you fall in the spectrum here, as neither are in your bag of tricks?

  22. Mar

Hmm, who hould I trust? jjf or Le Roi or medical doctors who have done the research?
    That’s a real tough one.
I flipped a coin and I decided to trust the doctors.
Maybe I will be proved wrong but I doubt it.

  23. Pat

“I decided to trust the doctors.”

    That’s why I don’t trust Trump.

  24. Kevin Scheunemann

    Nord,

    You are awful. Just awful.

  25. jjf

Doctors aren’t prescribing Trump’s cocktail because it hasn’t been proven.  Why can’t you recognize that Trump is telling stories to make you feel better?

  26. Mar

jjf, why must you lie? Did a Pathological Liar Le Roi give you the lying gene?

  27. jjf

Show me the studies, Mar.  You’re a medical guy, right?

  28. Le Roi du Nord

    k:

    Truthful, yes.

    Awful, no.

  29. Mar

jjf, as you are such a computer guy, I’m pretty sure you know how to use Google to answer your question.
    I’m not your personal librarian.

  30. jjf

So you’ll tell me I’m a liar, but not why.  Did I say something that’s incorrect?

  31. Kevin Scheunemann

    Nord,

What makes it even more awful is you cannot recognize how awful you are being by claiming Trump was touting drug prescription in any way. That is a disgusting lie.

You have reached a new level of awfulness.

  32. Mar

“Doctors aren’t prescribing Trump’s cocktail because it hasn’t been proven”
Show me where they haven’t prescribed it because it has not approved by the FDA.
Not show me where doctors are refusing to prescribe the drug because of the FDA.
Then look up where doctors have prescribed the drug.
Why do you hope for most deaths possible?

  33. jjf

    And from the article:

Although there are no currently approved treatments for COVID-19, both drugs have shown activity in laboratory studies against coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Anecdotal reports suggest that these drugs may offer some benefit in the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Clinical trials are needed to provide scientific evidence that these treatments are effective.

I’ve got an anecdotal report right here in my pocket.

  34. Jason

So you’re questioning the expertise of the FDA?  How many times in the past week have you quipped “I’ll trust the doctors and experts?”  LOL

  35. Tuerqas

What I wish would happen is to let someone who can put two sentences together conduct the briefing, and let the people who know the facts, give the facts. But Trumps ego won’t allow it.

What I would really hope that comes of this is that Gov’t or the health dept (or both) would realize that a reliable source of information is what is required for ‘medical emergencies’ such as this.  A single source such as the CDC website/hotline, 1oo% run by the medical profession would be given out by EVERYONE as the source to go to for information.

Unfortunately, there is about zero chance of that happening.  American politics is much too pervasive and pandemics are a perfect stage on which to spread fear and hate of the evil left or crazy right.  If Gov’t ‘agreed to have one medical source as the mouthpiece for a pandemic, all that would happen is that there would be a power struggle to control that source behind the scenes.  Just like the ‘free press’ is allowed only to freely put out the politically slanted information they put out, for whichever side owns it.

  36. Tuerqas

The top line above was supposed to be in quotes from Pat.  The quote designation showed up when I wrote it…

  37. jjf

Yes, Jason, I’m saying the FDA and docs in general have not proven a damn thing about the cocktail that Trump promoted.

Do you think Trump has any leverage over the FDA, and could’ve pressured them to make this minor move to allow it to be used under an emergency use authorization.

  38. Mar

Jason, jjf has said he hates President Trump and in his writings, he implies that he wants maximum deaths just to make Trump bad.
The fact is, that no drugs have had trials and officially approved to to combat the virus. Thus, jjf does not anyone to get any medication.
The more deaths, the bigger the smile jjf has.

  39. Mar

Gee, the US Navy hospital ship arrived in NYC this morning, weeks ahead of schedule.
The liberals here are wrong again. Trump wins again.

  40. Jason

    >Do you think Trump has any leverage over the FDA, and could’ve pressured them to make this minor move to allow it to be used under an emergency use authorization.

So you preach listening to the doctors and scientists in almost every discussion, until such experts say something that doesn’t fit your reactionary attack against anything Trump says.  Dance Monkey, Dance!

  41. jjf

Jason, my point stands.  When Trump made his promotion, this EUA wasn’t in place.  Show me the evidence.  Don’t show me Rudy’s tweet where he claims 100% success and tell me it’s evidence.

  42. Tuerqas

jjf, I am not really sure what your actual position is?  Do you believe that ‘during the epidemic’ is the wrong time to test for cures?  Do you believe that promising drugs should be state secrets and should NOT be leaked to the public until the FDA approves them, likely after the crisis has passed, or at least peaked?  Do you believe that people should not be allowed to volunteer for experimental testing or use potential cures with a Doctor’s written consent in the form of a prescription because it has not been FDA approved (an organization that I don’t even trust).

All of your statements so far suggest these beliefs to be yours.  I am not saying you are wrong, but I am saying I disagree.  If the above picture is incorrect, please point out the inaccuracies.

  43. Mark Hoefert

Gee, the US Navy hospital ship arrived in NYC this morning, weeks ahead of schedule. The liberals here are wrong again.

    Rachel Madow: 3/20/20:

“There’s no sign that they’ll be anywhere on site helping out anywhere in the country for weeks yet. The president said when he announced that those ships would be put into action against the COVID-19 epidemic. He said one of those ships would be operational in New York harbor by next week. That’s nonsense. It will not be there next week.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=cLJB0VoqVQY&feature=emb_title

  44. jjf

Tuerqas, my position is that it was very irresponsible for the President to tout the cocktail the way he did.

Yet those preliminary studies sparked intense interest after Trump tweeted that hydroxychloroquine plus an antibiotic could be “one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine” and should “be put in use immediately.” He cited a French study that gave the combo to six patients.

That’s not saying “let’s test it to see if it’s efficacious.”  That’s not saying “let’s find volunteers for a study.”  It’s telling people it’ll be like the next penicillin.

  45. Mar

And yet, jjf, he was right and you were wrong…again.

  46. jjf

Mar, you think this is “one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine”?

  47. Merlin

The T-AHs are not being deployed to treat coronavirus patients. Both will serve in support of local civilian hospitals as a floating referral hospital for non-coronavirus patients.

  48. Tuerqas

So you do think we should be testing new treatments and we should keep the public apprised, and would probably support a drug that Obama was quoted as saying ‘the drug has promise’ you just did not like the level of Trumps’ enthusiasm on this particular ‘cocktail’?

That is pretty thin for the level of vituperation you have thrown at it on multiple posts…

I do not hate Trump, I just think he is a contemptible, despicable excuse for a human being, so, on the same level as most national level politicians.  That said, everything he does is larger than life in his own eyes, so everything out of his mouth is of major importance, huuuge…to him.  And that style of leadership is nothing new.  If we didn’t have this dark divide between left and right, the left would have found his constant histrionics tiresome, but they would not be trying to demonize his every word while the right would think it kinda cute, but not sanctifying his every diatribe.

  49. dad29

In all this back-forth about hydrochloroquine, Jiffy has never mentioned that it DOES NO HARM if used “off-label.”  There’s a reason for that, of course; Jiffy doesn’t really give a flying fart about the people who are suffering from this disease.

He only cares about scoring points against Trump.

Well, OK.  He has about 5 more years to do that.

  50. Le Roi du Nord

    Hmmm.

I take hydrochloroquine 2x daily for RA at a dose prescribed and closely monitored by my MD because it does cause retinal toxicity, and can have adverse affects on the liver.  Using it improperly, “off-label” as you say, can cause damage.  Be smart.  Be safe.

  51. jjf

    Where’d you read that, Dad29?  What’s a Qt?

I don’t give a flying fart?  You’d be happier if I elevated the economy over human life.

  52. Mar

Jjf, you already did. You elevated the economy over the lives of black and brown people in the inner cities.

  53. Mar

But I am sure the lefties will be that I just lost one of my jobs and now have to survive on 1 job.
Even though our county, just a little smaller than the Wisconsin, has just 5 cases in the entire county.
More maddening is that our rotten governor just said he would not shut down the state.

  54. Mark Hoefert

    https://freebeacon.com/latest-news/woman-who-ingested-fish-tank-cleaner-was-prolific-donor-to-democratic-causes/

    Yes, “science”.  How ironic.

Wanda’s most recent contributions to Democratic causes came on Feb. 26 and 28. They went to the 314 Action Fund, a Democratic political action committee that describes itself as “the largest pro-science advocacy organization committed to electing scientists” and aims to “promote the responsible use of data driven fact based approaches in public policy.”

  55. MjM

Nort takes something: “I take hydrochloroquine 2x daily….”

You might want to procure a second opinion. That stuff you claim to take doesn’t exist. Seems counterintuitive to “Be smart. Be safe.”, wouldn’t you say?

Nort opines at a time he says we shouldn’t: “Using it improperly, “off-label” as you say, can cause damage. ”

Oh! Missed it by “ “ that much. Had you stopped at “improperly” yooda been fine because, gee, any medication used improperly causes damage, even – imagine! – aspirin.

But “off label” use is a staple in medicine. Even for Hydroxychloroquine.

    You could look it up.

  56. Le Roi du Nord

    mjm:

Correct, I did intentionally misspell hydroxychloroquine, I won’t deny that and will take full responsibility, (unlike your fearless leader, “I don’t take responsibility at all”).  But I did it to lessen the embarrassment to dud, as once again he was wrong in his claim, “In all this back-forth about hydrochloroquine…..”.   I stooped to his level of knowledge and I apologize.  I won’t do it again.

And the drug still isn’t FDA approved for the treatment of covid 19.  You could look it up.

  57. Le Roi du Nord

    Mark:

    You missed this part:

In her first national news interview, Wanda told NBC News that she took the fish tank cleaner in a tragically botched attempt to follow medical advice that Trump had relayed in a press conference earlier that week.

“We saw Trump on TV—every channel—and all of his buddies and that this was safe,” she said last Monday. “Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure.”

Tip of the day: Never take medical advice from a bankrupted casino operator.

  58. Mar

Also tip of the day. Never take medical advice from a liberal.
They like socialized medicine, death panels, and they like to demonize the medical and pharmacy industry.

  59. Mark Hoefert

@ Nord: Tip of the day: Never take medical advice from a bankrupted casino operator.

Nope, missed nothing.  I take my medical advice from my physician, and sometimes discuss with my retired physician brother.

Husband would be alive if they had watched FOX News instead of whatever stations were harping on what a fool Trump was for saying that a medication successfully used in other countries would be a “game changer.”

She was a donor to 314 Action PAC – they leveraged this for more donations for “science”.  Don’t let a crisis go to waste.

Funny some of the comments being posted on their Facebook Page.

When do you intend to print a retraction of this false story???? Do you even have the good graces to be ashamed of yourselves? Highly doubtful, I would guess. Hope you feel stupid now!

I understand the couple mistook chloroquine phosphate used in fish aquariums with the anti-malarial medication known as hydroxychloroquine. Also understand they were big donors to 314 Action. Would you consider them typical patrons of 314 Action?

All you “pro-science” folks like to eat aquarium cleaner? Hey, the guy won’t get the virus now. It sorta worked.

Huge false equivalence! That guy ate that chemical that he found in his fish supplies ate – in one “dose”- I think a hundred times the recommended dosage that they use for the real drug for its real purpose over the course of a week. Clinical trials are not the same thing at all!! And there will be no way they can use it without the FDA approving it, so whether they “throw their approval behind it” or not it doesn’t matter.

When this first happened, I saw speculation that it was a suicide scenario.  Now I am wondering if this was a murder.  Odd that he took more than enough to kill him, but she did not take the same amount and survived.

Her excuse that Trump caused them to take it makes it appear that she is trying to divert attention from what really happened.  Maybe the husband was pissed off that she was giving their money to Democrats and needed to be offed.

I look forward to the results of that investigation, but I am sure you will be too busy chasing the next squirrel to notice.

  60. Mar

I call BS on the NBC story. The lady is in critical condition and in ICU and she is answering the questions?
And in the conversation she supposedly had, she never once mentioned President Trump.
So, I call out NBC and say this is fake news.

  61. Le Roi du Nord

“I take my medical advice from my physician, and sometimes discuss with my retired physician brother.”

    Exactly.

  62. MjM

Nort tries, fails:  I did intentionally misspell hydroxychloroquine...”

Yeah, pardon me for not believing yer lyin azz.

Nortamous Ignouramous:  And the drug still isn’t FDA approved for the treatment of covid 19.

BFD.   It’s not FDA approved for it’s other off label uses, numbnutz.  Nor is any other med used off label FDA approved.  That’s what off label means.

    You could look it up.

  63. Jason

    >Tip of the day: Never take medical advice from a bankrupted casino operator.

Do you believe Dr Faucci when answering a stupid question from Acosta? Faucci said “I believe we acted very very early” in regards “if we had taken action in Jan or Feb would there be fewer deaths?”.
