Illinois Proposes Massive Tax Hike on Cars and Gas

Don’t laugh. The politicians in Madison from both parties are looking to Springfield with green eyes at proposals like this.

A proposed hike in Illinois’ annual registration fee for electric vehicles, from $17.50 to $1,000, is being called unfair by current EV owners, and a sales disincentive by manufacturers — just as the new technology is beginning to gain broader traction.

“It’s outrageous,” said Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, of Chicago, who bought a Tesla Model S five years ago. “I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV ownership.”

Aimed at raising money to make overdue road improvements across Illinois, the proposed legislation would also more than double the state’s gas tax to 44 cents a gallon and raise the registration fee for standard vehicles to $148, from $98, among other elements.

But the kicker is a nearly 60-fold increase in the electric vehicle registration fee — one that is sure to cause sticker shock across a nascent segment of the auto industry, which has depended on government incentives to entice early adopters.

That’s what happens when one insists on a dedicated funding stream for roads, and there is an alternative that avoids one of the two (three in Chicagoland) major sources of said stream entirely and contributes a fraction to the other major source.

Well, OK, then……..would you like road build/repairs to come from the general fund?

Why not? Let them compete with everything else government spends money on.

Maybe the total cost of government will actually go down then.

    Typical liberals!

    Destroying the poor!

I won’t live long enough to see that, but send me a postcard when it happens.

It’s mostly doable.  Keep registration fees sufficient ONLY for DMV’s internal and external reporting and administrative purposes (plates, tags, record-keeping, etc.).

But ….always a but…….Wisconsin does not collect income taxes from trucks ‘just passing through.’  With zero fuel tax, Wisconsin may not collect anything at all from them, albeit they contribute to road deterioration.

    Then what?

And the leadership in Illinois, New Your and California don’t understand why people are leaving their states. Progressive raise taxes. It’s what they do.

    New York not New Your!

How so?  Facts would be nice.

Rich pensioners can afford a lot more gas-tax than poor retail employees, LeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeRoy.  You ought to know.

Seriously, you have to question this? Have you been in a comma for the past 50 years?
The war on poverty continues. Poverty, liberal, pimps rule the inner cities, how many poverty pimps have been convicted of fraud and theft? How about keeping the poor down? How about Liberals demanding the poir and minorities toe the liberal plantation line? No conservative opinions allowed. How about the horrible conditions in mostly, minority schools? And yet liberals oppose school choice.
Liberals are just missing the pointy white hats and white capes.
