US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen an outspoken critic of President Obama’s climate change policies to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, 48, is seen as an ally of the fossil fuel industry.
He has been a key player in legal challenges against EPA regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.
Democrats and environmentalists in the US have expressed dismay, calling Mr Pruitt a climate change denier.
News of Mr Pruitt’s appointment emerged on Wednesday evening. Mr Trump formally confirmed it in a statement on Thursday.

Church and state separation is important when it comes to climate change evangelists being in charge of EPA. Obama never had proper separation of global warming church in his administration.

It’s not that these appointments have different viewpoints than our current President, rather I think people are concerned because these picks are extremely hostile to the very idea and mission of the agencies they are being tapped to lead. Pruitt running the EPA is akin to a vegetarian being the head of the Meat council. DeVos being the Education Secretary isn’t any different than a “no nukes” pacifist in charge of the Pentagon.
And yes…I totally understand that you feel these particular federal agencies, and many others, should simply be eliminated and you’re ok with seeing the positions being filled with people who wish to dismantle the entire organization…but please be honest about why so many people are “dismayed” by these picks. It goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond a simple difference of opinion.
Trumps way smarter then he appears. Trump has never been a conservative. Looks to me like he is setting things up so Republicans will take he full brunt of any designed failures. Many people, not necessarily me, have speculated this is a big conspiracy. That Trump has been working with Dems to destroy the Republican Party. With every nomination it looks more and more like they are onto something. Hard to believe anyone could be so stupid.
