Brennan Confirmed For Appeals Court

WASHINGTON – Milwaukee lawyer Michael Brennan was confirmed for a key federal judgeship Thursday, filling the oldest appellate vacancy in the country but deepening a partisan schism in the U.S. Senate over judges.

Brennan will take a seat on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago that has stood open since 2010 amid a bitter political standoff.

He was confirmed 49-46 with only Republican votes, over the objections of Democrat Tammy Baldwin, Wisconsin’s junior senator.

That has typically been enough to sink a nomination in recent years, because senators from both parties have enjoyed an effective veto over the selection of federal judges from their home states, a tradition known as the “blue slip.”

Outside of party loyalty, there was no rational reason for Baldwin’s intransigence.

  1. Kevin Scheunemann says:

    Baldwin was acting foolish.

  2. Le Roi du Nord says:

“Baldwin’s GOP colleague from Wisconsin, Ron Johnson, used his blue slip power to block one of Democratic President Barack Obama’s nominees for the same 7th Circuit seat that his party filled Thursday.”

  3. Kevin Scheunemann says:

There was legitimate reason to block that radical nominee.

  4. Le Roi du Nord says:

And what was that legitimate reason?  Nominated by Obama?

  5. MjM says:

    Hypocrites, indeed.

Baldwin cried foul, saying, “President Trump has decided to go it alone and turn his back on a Wisconsin tradition of having a bipartisan process for nominating judges.”

    Three years ago….

But the commission last year could muster the requisite five votes for only two of the eight applicants for the 7th Circuit, one of whom was Schott. …. But citing the many years the seat stood vacant, Baldwin acted on her own, sending the names of all eight applicants to Obama. –

  6. Kevin Scheunemann says:

You mean opposing the leftist socialist worldview is NOT a legitimate reason?

Do you know how many people socialist ideology killed last century?

  7. Le Roi du Nord says:

So the court nominee was a leftist socialist?  Says who?

Once again this is a situation where you are always right, and anyone with an opposing viewpoint is always wrong.  Hubris, thou art k.

  8. MikeyParks says:

du Nerd: “Nominated by Obama” is absolutely a legitimate reason for disqualification. Look what he did to the Supreme Court.

  9. dad29 says:

Obama is the AIDS of the (D) party.  The good news?  It cannot be cured and it is always fatal.

So yah–his nominees are flawed ipso facto.

  10. Le Roi du Nord says:

There was a great piece on WPR this afternoon about the history of this vacancy and the timeline.  If you want to call out folks, talk a look at how rojo behaved on this issue.  But at least he maintained his position as the dumbest senator in the District.

  11. Kevin Scheunemann says:

    WPR= Socialist propaganda.

Fortunately, the only crime the WPR socialists commit is boring you to death…except when they have Owen on.

  12. Le Roi du Nord says:

What arrogance.  What/who gives you the right to be all-knowing?

  13. Kevin Scheunemann says:

Truth really offends you, doesn’t it?

Trying to grasp your logic leap here. Calling WPR “socialist propaganda” is equal to being “all knowing”?

What happens if I actually used real criticism, or similar insults that are hurled against Christians (that you defend), instead of sugarcoating it?

Would you claim me to be invincible smart guy?

  14. Le Roi du Nord says:

Did you listen to the piece?  Then do some background checking on the story?  If not you have no right to comment on it one way or the other. And you wouldn’t know the truth if it bit you, so don’t question the veracity of the WPR story and the underlying historical perspective .

Would I claim you are an “invincible smart guy”?  No, I would claim that you think you are but haven’t been able to substantiate your claim.

  15. Kevin Scheunemann says:

Sorry if I stomped on your gospel of WPR.   Didn’t know you were an evangelistic disciple of WPR.

Should we treat each other’s religions with more decency?

  16. dad29 says:

Am forced to listen to WPR on Sundays, usually catching about 1-2 hours.  Recently they have run a few stories which are NOT Lefty memes–and the people voicing those stories sound as surprised to be reading them as I was in hearing them.

    Something’s going on there.

  17. Le Roi du Nord says:

Not everything is based on religion.  Some involves facts and truth.  Stay current.

  18. Kevin Scheunemann says:

You certainly get excited, like a disciple, over something that is suppose to be objective.

WPR can, sometimes run an objective story, but to act like WPR is unbiased “Facts” and “truth”…that is faith, not objective analysis.

  19. Le Roi du Nord says:

Did you listen to the piece?  Obviously not, because if you did you would see how foolish you are being.  Some things never change…….

  20. Paul says:

More personal attacks from the White Nationalist Troll…

  21. jjf says:

Paul, you are opposed to personal attacks?

  22. Paul says:

Don’t you have to creep on some E-list child star, Johnny Foust?
