Police Interrupt Church Service on Palm Sunday

This is tyranny. Hat tip to Matt Batzel.

The church was live streaming their service. The people involved in the service were there, but the pews were empty. After getting a call from someone, the West Bend Police actually interrupted the service.

Our freedom of religion and our freedom of assembly are being oppressed. This is unconscionable and the West Bend Police Department should be ashamed of themselves.

I tried to find where the police made their entrance without watching the whole service (I watched my church this AM, so one sermon is enough for the day).

Would like to see an Open Records Request made to find out what crank called it in.  On other social media sites I see a lot of people making threats to turn people in.  Last week quite a few restaurants got slammed with Fish Fry takeout orders on a magnitude never seen before and kind of lost crowd control. I saw one guy posting about how he would have turned in the owner to the police, and how the police would have given him the proceeds from the fine.  The police have better things to do than following up on crank calls.

I imagine the police were in a situation where they had to take a look.  And you would want the police to be just as responsive if someone called in a threat of an active shooter.

I agree.  West Bend Police should be ashamed of themselves.

Shame on interim Mayor for not indicating this was a mistake.

A slow roll through a nearly empty parking lot should have told the PD all they needed to know.

And if the slow roll through the nearly-empty parking lot didn’t tell the responding officer all he needed to know, a quick peek through the door should have.

Now the video seems to cue up at the interruption (at 30:00).  Thanks.

A slow roll through a nearly empty parking lot should have told the PD all they needed to know.

Seems like the number of cars did draw attention – more than 10 if all 16 people came separately?  The PD would have not been able to confirm that no more than 10 of the 16 occupants were in the same room without a visual check inside.

From West Bend radio news report:

“Someone called the cops on a church in West Bend because there were a couple of extra cars in the parking lot. West Bend Police say they got a call about a possible Safer at Home violation yesterday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Officers say there were 16 people inside the building, but never more than 10 in one room at one time. Police say they didn’t issue any tickets.”

Imagine someone calling for a wellness check on you, and then the police came in and shot you.

  7. Kevin Scheunemann

    jjf,

    What the……are you talking about?

Do you need a drug test?

  8. jjf

So the cops got a call, and they responded, and checked it out.  The service continued.

You have to excuse jjf. He doesn’t respect certain segments of the population, why would you expect him to respect religion.
A simple peek inside the church should have told the officer that no farsical state rules were being broken broken without interrupting the service.

  10. Kevin Scheunemann

    jjf,

Interrupting the service is a violation of 1st amendment.

I guess we’ll need to see the reports on who called it in, and what the cop decided to do.  Like I say, if you think it’s OK to err on the side of caution when it comes to cops shooting people, why shouldn’t we give them leeway in this situation?

  12. Kevin Scheunemann

    jjf,

Why not wait until after the service if there must be an inquiry in violation of first amendment?

  13. jjf

Maybe the officer felt threatened.  There was probably a statue of a dead guy hanging from the wall at the front of the room.

  14. Kevin Scheunemann

    jjf,

Typical godless intolerance on your part.

  15. Mar

Poor jjf, he has to choose between 2 entities he hates: the cops or the Church.
And he decides to with the police state.
    Typical communist thinking.

  16. Mar

You realize, Kevin, if this was a service in Spanish, with many illegal aliens in the pews, I’m sure the liberals, including jjf, they would be outraged.

  17. jjf

I can tell the idea of a First Amendment violation gets you turgid, but did the cop stop them from delivering their message?  You’re watching it on YouTube.

    Mar,

There would have been indignant cries of racism.  Local libs would be foaming and look like zealous disciples for Christ in defense of the church.

Your point is very valid.   The jiffster has to decide which group he hates more, and he decided the church.

  19. jjf

Obviously the cop shouldn’t have even gone in there.  We’re talking about white Christians!  They have privilege!

  20. Kevin Scheunemann

    Jjf,

What white privilege? Their rights were violated because they were not black, hispanic, or some other intersectional liberal victim group, high on the victimhood hierarchy.

    You would cry racism otherwise.

Because we expect them to be able to exercise a modicum of discretion or at least possibly bare intelligence.  A simple walk and peek through the rooms would show no violations.  No guns or other weapons in the complaint or church, no extra caution.  Kind of a simple interpretation.
