In total 148,800,000 people were employed last month, 7,915,000 were unemployed, and 5,955,000 people were looking for a job.
This article would definitely be concerning if there was any truth in the numbers. However, it’s a little misleading. The article states “The number of individuals out of the workforce last month – due to discouragement, retirement or otherwise” was 94,610,000. Retirement accounts for 42,000,000 people. The “otherwise” also accounts for “the disabled” (10,000,000) and college students (20,000,000). That’s 72,000,000 either discouraged, retired or otherwise people (16yrs. or older) out of the work force. The articles numbers don’t add up. The problem doesn’t appear to be as serious as some irresponsible journalist is making it out to be. Anytime I see numbers based on “otherwise” or “discouraged” it sets off red flags. I knew this article was bunk the minute I saw it. Although, I’m sure other groups could be accounted for, the reality and still a concern is that 20,000,000 (maybe less) work eligible individuals are not employed and that is still a serious problem.
Yet you’ve not rebutted the article. Stick to jacking off on anime sites and let the adults worry about juked numbers.
Let’s take the “prime” workforce of 25-54 year-olds. Last month, there were 125,238,000 in the civilian non-institutionalized population, 100,942,000 either employed or actively looking for work and thus part of the labor force on a seasonally-adjusted basis (101,200,000 on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis), and 96,735,000 employed on a seasonally-adjusted basis (97,142,000 on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis).
The seasonally-adjusted 80.60% labor-force participation rate is, other than October 2013’s 80.59% LFPR, the lowest since March 1984. The not-seasonally-adjusted 80.81% LFPR is the lowest September since 1983. Back then, there were far fewer women aged 25-54 in the workforce.
The seasonally-adjusted employment-population ratio of 77.24%, while the 3rd-best of the Obama Presidency (behind June 2015’s slightly-higher 77.24% and February 2015’s 77.28%), is behind every month from July 1986 through December 2008. The not-seasonally-adjusted 77.57% employment-population ratio, while the best September of the Obama Presidency, is worse than every September from 1986 through 2008.
It isn’t exactly an increase in disabled – between December 2007 and December 2014, the civilian non-institutionalized population dropped by just over 1.4 million, the 25-54 labor force dropped by just under 3.8 million (or just over 2.4 million net dropouts among the potential “prime” workforce), and the number of people aged 25-54 receiving Social Security disability payments increased by just over 0.3 million. That leaves about 2.1 million dropouts. Given the BLS says wages haven’t exactly been growing, I doubt it is a voluntary return to the 1-worker/2-adult household.
