Americans Unhappy With Direction of Country

This isn’t surprising.

Eighty-five percent of U.S. adults say the country is on the wrong track, and 79 percent describe the economy as poor, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

[…]

Even among Democrats, 67 percent call economic conditions poor.

What is surprising, or perhaps not, is how steadfast the Biden Administration is despite these kinds of polls. I think that Obama would have changed course by now, or, at least, pretended to change course. Clinton definitely would have changed. But Biden is still aggressively pursuing the same policies and using the same rhetoric to sell it. He hasn’t moved an inch despite overwhelming evidence that his policies are failing and the people hate it. It says something about a man who has spent his entire adult life as a Washington animal from a safe district.

I read somewhere that independent voters are polling as planning to vote republican in the coming mid terms in the millions. Now polling is what it is…. But damn, even with all the theatrics and showmanship of the Jan 6th farce the Dems are bleeding.

This is the tack of the Dem 21st century and if it were honest, I could actually respect it. They are trying to advance plans for when fossil fuels are scarce, then gone (not taking into account that those big oil companies won’t be willing to die out when fuels are gone, they are all working on alternatives all the time). Whether conservatives like it or not, Democracy is not on the wave of the future right now, modern Socialism is and Dems are trying to ‘catch us up’ with Europe. Now most of us here see many of the problems that Europe is facing as undesirable, but everyone fears (to some degree) the modern version of Socialism practiced by China.
The Dem advancement problem is greed. Their plans are all rife with graft and do not really address the current situation with their ‘solutions’. Obama stuck in step 1 to universal healthcare, but it failed because, except for his insurance increase freeze throughout his first term, Dems did not address the entire mess that is the current US insurance and litigation industry. Coupled with not implementing their reforms until the end of his second term (thus giving him his second term), Reps had time to kill it before it grew. Dems would not take on the industries that need reform to advance universal healthcare.
They have the same problem with energy now. They did not really take on the fossil fuel industry, they simply said produce less, but charge what you want. Obama tried to give lots of money to solar companies instead of, say, mandating that all sunny climate new construction require solar capabilities. We did it with seatbelts. A new build requirement would have given solar companies money from product rather than money for graft, a much more lasting business model.
I am not in favor of socialism, but I do see that done right it could help the poorest better than laissez faire Democracy. You just need a populace taught from birth to honor and trust their elders and leaders like many oriental cultures (and then have leaders worthy of trust). We do not have any of those here, but I believe that is why Dems have worked for decades to control schooling. They are trying for a more dependent populace and in some ways it is working. Just an opinion based on what I have seen, no demands for proof required.

T, I respectfully agree with what you’ve conveyed here.

This is such a vague poll. “Not happy with the direction…” What does that even mean. What direction? The economy? The social infrastructure? The Supreme Court decisions? Because according to the article 52% said the RvW decision was a step backward. I would be really interested to hear this poll without the context of the economy. Better or worse? The economy puts such a black cloud over this type of generic polling question.

As we have beaten with a dead horse, the inflation sucks EVERYWHERE in the world right now. Due to COVID, supply chain, & oil production/refinement.

    T. I do agree that as a country we should just start mandating solar on new construction. But my guess is that energy companies would lobby against that HARD.

But as far as honoring and trusting elders? Nope. The Boomers are the ones that got us into many of these messes. I say get them OUT of the equation and into retirement. Open up opportunities for younger people to advance now. Who do you think is the most heavily invested in these older technologies with their retirements and investments. Nothing will change until we can remove the boomers from the decision making process.

    >The economy puts such a black cloud over this type of generic polling question.
That is because the economy hits everyone the hardest, not just portions of the people. It SHOULD be the greatest driving factor for polls like these.

    >T. I do agree that as a country we should just start mandating solar on new construction. But my guess is that energy companies would lobby against that HARD.
I honestly don’t know about that second part. The top solar company in the US is Ormat and their parent company is Ormat Industries, the company that developed an efficient oil sands extraction. Like I said, oil companies are spending a lot of money on alt energy sources.
However, China is the leader in solar sales, we need manufacturing to increase in the US to become a leader there, or at least a US internal use leader, and a mandated solar component to new builds would be a great incentive to make that happen.

Honestly, there is not a generation since the founding fathers that I would ‘trust’ as my leaders and the baby boomers are the largest generation I have ever heard described. When I was growing up, my parents were in the baby boomer generation, but now I am technically in that generation at 59. I don’t see ‘my’ generation as any more or less problem than the Gen X that I used to be considered part of (ever the cusp born:), but that is also just opinion. I have heard for years now from younger people that the evil baby boomers are responsible, but never a list of well conceived reasons on why. If you want to provide that, I would be interested.
Gen X is the last generation that public schools taught logic and critical thinking to so I am loath to trust the youngers simply because they are younger. If younger gens are convinced of it, why do they continually vote so many baby boomers (or older gens) into office? It is the gen boomers pushing our economy further into inflation rather than trying to fight our way out.
A mixed group of gens as leaders will always be the best, imo.

You are the cusp of BB & GenX. I am 44 and closer to the Millenial cusp (but solidly in GenX).
Boomers started wars. Boomers drove this economy into massive debt and deficit. Boomers are (partially) responsible for the housing bubble and now the inflated pricing. Boomers have basically held most political power for the past 20-30 years.

The economy will swing better it will swing worse at times. That is what it does, and always has. While I know that it is a vote driver on election years when the economy is down, people tend to be short sided. I have generally found that the youth of our country is right when it comes to social issue progress and acceptance. And I would rather have them vote than boomers who are more interested in their retirement and “the way is USED to be…” and their religious beliefs.

2020 saw a big push by GenZ & Millenial voters. And it is only getting bigger. Younger voters tend to vote democratic. Republicans haven’t won a majority vote for president in like 20 years, and I don’t think they will anytime soon. The problem seems to be that the younger generations don’t vote nearly enough in mid-terms. 50ish% of registered young voters voted in 2020, if we can get that up to 58-60%… Republicans don’t stand a chance. So, while I do think that D’s will get beat in the mid-terms. I always have faith in the Pres election years.

    >the youth of our country is right when it comes to social issue progress and acceptance.

While they loudly proclaim that they are, in reality, the youth of all sides of the political spectrum are the least tolerant to people that don’t just as loudly proclaim their agreement or allegiance to the popular viewpoints.

    >This is such a vague poll. “Not happy with the direction…” What does that even mean. What direction?

Freefall is generally straight down with only minimal lateral deviation. Only until impact, of course.

  9. dad29

Boomers have basically held most political power for the past 20-30 years.

    You’re half-right.

DEMOCRAT Boomers have basically held most political power for the past 20-30 years.

By the way, DEMOCRAT Presidents have started more US war involvement than Pubbies. You can look it up.

Facts are such a bitch, kid. Learn to history.

  10. penquin

    held most political power

How is that being defined? Not necessarily disagreeing, just wondering whatcha got in mind…

  11. penquin

Wasn’t the very first Republican elected as President the same guy who led the US into the most destructive war…both in terms of life and property…we have ever endured here in America? At least the Democratics send their death&destruction to far-off lands rather than waging it in our very own backyard.

heh. Calm your titties…just playin’ there.

Jokes aside (well, kinda true but said jestingly) – what do you meaning by “started US war involvement”? ’cause when I take your advice and check your math, there are many different ways one can count such a thing….declared wars, undeclared wars, no-fly zones, “War on Drugs” & “War on Terror”, monetary aid to countries at war, etc etc.

Ain’t necessarily disagreeing, just wondering how you’re doing the counting on this.

Read this morning that Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first black Supreme Court Justice. I understand the intentional diss on Clarence Thomas, but may the ghost of Thurgood Marshall forever haunt their dumb asses. Too many people seem to think history began when they were born.

  13. dad29

So, Penquin: when does your bartending shift start?

We already know that you Democrats are really, really, PO’d over someone taking away your slaves; in fact, y’all invented NEW “property” by re-defining “fetus” as a non-human just to make up for it and to have millions more to kill at will. Now you’re all PO’d because the Constitution or sumpin’sumpin’.

You have a little traction, because President Sparklefarts never ‘started’ a war. He merely bombed more countries than any other President in history, and it’s rumored that he bombed countries not yet named, just to make sure.

But he didn’t start a war!

  14. penquin

So, Penquin: when does your bartending shift start?

We already know that you Democrats are really blah blah blah blah blah

    *sigh*

I ain’t a bartender (NTTAWWT, of course), ain’t a Democrat, nor have I ever owned any slaves. Your assumption about me being “PO’d” is also false, and I have no idea what this “traction” you are talking about or which of our 46 Presidents you are referring to with that colorful nickname. I am merely asking some simple questions, in a respectful manner, in order to better understand your point-of-view regarding this topic.

Perhaps you and your pals should leave all the gossip&comments about moi in those posts where Owen has actually made me the topic of discussion, and stick to the actual subject matter in all these other ones. I’m sure the folks who visit this blog from all over our state don’t come here to read about my personal life in practically every thread….and if they do, then ya’ll should at least be truthful about it.

In the meantime, if anyone has the actual data/background info behind those two talking points you are most likely just repeating from someone else without actually understanding it (maybe on a bumper sticker or a Facebook meme?) then I’d be interested in knowing more. It is always kinda funny seeing the look on my lefty pals’ faces when it is pointed out their own political leaders are bloody warmongers and thus I would like to have this info, if true, in my pocket. But I ain’t gonna repeat it without being able to explain it….and while responding to a simple request for clarification with a basic “Fuck you, you fucking fucker!”-type of retort may be perfectly normal among your circle of friends, it really isn’t considered a reasonable response among most people.

Read this morning that Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first black Supreme Court Justice

May be a typo in the article or perhaps you skimmed it quickly (both of which happens to the best of us), but she is the first black woman on the Supreme Court.

Not sayin’ anything one-way-or-the-other about that, ‘cept I hope they had some cake to celebrate it…because any excuse for cake is a good excuse!

Well, Penquin, I was hearing that Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall were having a big laugh.
And I am pretty sure both Clarence and Thurgood know what a woman is.
