The U.S. Senate on Saturday passed President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan in a party-line vote after an all-night session that was delayed repeatedly as the Republican minority tried but failed to push through around three dozen amendments.
The plan passed in a 50-49 vote with the support of every Democrat but no Republicans. It is one of the largest stimulus bills in U.S. history and gives Biden his first major legislative victory since taking office in January.
The partisan victory was made possible by Democrats winning two Senate seats in Georgia special elections in January, giving them narrow control of the chamber.
This is not a relief bill. Our nation has an unemployment rate of 6.2% – almost full employment – and GDP is expanding. There are pockets of economic damage in mostly-Democrat led states and cities where they remain locked down by Democrats. But the majority of the nation is opening up and people are recovering. The greatest stimulus we could have would be for government to get out of the way.
Instead, they are choosing to spend money that we don’t have on things we don’t need. This is an absolute corrupt piece of legislation designed to pay off liberal interests with a veneer of “COVID relief.” It is a disgrace and the people who voted for it should be run out of office. While America spends our way to insolvency, China is rising, and we are handing them our position in the world.
