Given that Wendy and I have done the zip line in Roatan, this hit close to home.
That’s because it was on that very same zip-line tour that a passenger cruising onboard NCL’s Norwegian Spirit lost her life last week, falling to her death when a faulty cable snapped. The March 18 accident sent Barbara Sue Fojtasek, 44, of Texas, along with a tour guide, plummeting more than 30 feet to the forest floor below. Fojtasek was rushed to a private clinic on Roatan before being transported to a hospital in San Pedro Sula, in mainland Honduras, where she died from her injuries.
The Gumbalimba Park tour guide was also treated for serious injuries, but survived and was released from the hospital on March 22.
Then again, we drive every day too and the news of car accidents rarely cause any consternation. Still…
Still, Gumbalimba Park is my very favorite place on the planet. I can’t wait to go back. I’d probably do the zip lines again, too.
There are a lot of conflicting stories about the accident. Some say the harness failed, other say the cable failed and the operator forgot to hook the woman’s safety cable to the back up cable. Some say the woman was too overweight for the harness. Another account said the woman stopped in the middle of a run and the operator had to go out and get her. Lots of conflicting info. I hope they figure it out, fix it and get up and running ASAP.
