Wright’s Rant

Wright is the gift the keeps on giving

Maybe Barack Obama skimped on his contribution when the offering plate came past at Trinity United Church of Christ. Or perhaps he nodded off during one of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons. It’s hard to think of another reason why the Illinois Senator’s former pastor would put on the kind of performance this morning at the National Press Club that can only be described as a political disaster.

[...]

Could he explain the context behind the sermon he gave after September 11, 2001? “Have you heard the whole sermon? No? That nullifies that question.” How does he respond to critics who charge that he is unpatriotic? “How many years did Cheney serve?” Does the fact that Obama says he never heard Wright’s most controversial sermons mean he’s not much of a churchgoer? “He goes to church as much as you do. What did your pastor preach on last week?”

It continued through a defense of Louis Farrakhan and Wright’s insistence that the U.S. government may have introduced AIDS into the black community. Not surprisingly, the Obama campaign has strenuously refused to comment on Wright’s remarks. But top strategist David Axelrod reminded MSNBC viewers this morning that Wright was “out there doing his own thing.” “It’s a free country,” he added. “But to the extent that people impute to Senator Obama words that are not his and sentiments that are not his, it’s obviously not helpful.”

  1. Have you heard the whole sermon?

That’s a valid question for everyone who has an opinion about Wright. Condensed to soundbites, the guy sounds loony. In the context of a full examination of the man, or an hour-long interview, or a full sermon, he sounds like a smart, passionate person who (like most other smart, passionate people) says things that can be taken as controversial or reduced to scary-sounding soundbites.

For a more complete picture of the man, this recent interview by Bill Moyers is a good starting point.

  2. That interview was such useless fluff it just made me madder.  No hard questions at all.  Nothing but whatever pretty picture Wright wanted to paint.  I wanted one question asked.  “Do you really believe the Govs goal is genocide on blacks?  Nothing close ever came up.  But he has answered it since then ,"YES!"

And this is the guy Obama hides in the basement with to pray [befor the story broke] as he KNEW it would be political suicide to practice his brand of religion out in the open.  The religion of hate, fear and bangin the drums of racial war!

  3. "Did you hear the whole sermon”?  Did anyone else notice how he said his words were takin out of context and he is being victimized, the black church in entirty is being victimized by the twisting of his words BUT, YES America keeps delivering terrorism to others so of course it’s gonna come home?

In one breath he plays the “Oh poor me, I’m a victimized black man card whos words were twisted AND also insisted that what he said was in fact his own belief.  What kind of f****ed up double talk is that?

  6. Maybe I can find a link later.  I think it was while he was addressing the national press in D.C.  He was asked point blank, given the chance to backstep but in response he listed the evils of America and said “So do I think America is capable of such things, of course I do.” I will look for link that not an exact quote but OMG how could anyone take what he said as anything other then a loud and clear YES?

  7. A clown and his 15 minutes are fun to watch.

The best part of this is that while listening to Rush I get to enjoy the ironic fact that despite Wright’s idiotic rants he still managed to serve this country more than the deferment-enjoying radio host.

  8. Yes I have listened to the whole speech (available all over the internet) and yes - this guy is a nut. While Obama is trying to run for president - this guy is trying to get his 15 minutes.
Sure glad he isn’t my pastor - but I would have gotten up and walked out on any of his sermons - never to return.

  9. Y’all satisfied now? Has Obama sufficiently condemned, denounced, censured, renounced, criticized, and otherwise passed judgment on his former pastor to your satisfaction?

  10. Even if Obama pulled Wright into a back alley and beat the crap out of him the irreconcilable cynics would still be convinced they share the same views.

  12. Good speech, if that had been his initial reaction there would have been no big problem.  It did come too late to mean anything.  Also, I do believe Obama told more then a couple lies throughout this.
