Woman Charged With Child Neglect

A portrait of dysfunction

The mother of a 2-year-old girl who was found wandering alone late Monday on Milwaukee’s north side was charged Thursday with one count of child neglect.

Police were called after a person saw the girl alone near N. 27th and W. Burleigh streets about 11 p.m. Monday, according to a criminal complaint. The girl was dehydrated and had a fever of 102 degrees, the complaint says.

The girl was treated at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and released to the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare.

The girl’s mother, Shymika S. Williams, told police she paid $25 to three acquaintances who live near N. 29th and W. Burleigh streets to babysit the girl for the weekend about two weeks ago, according to the complaint.

Williams, 20, did not know the babysitters’ full names or addresses, the complaint says.

Williams apparently did not pick up her daughter after the weekend. Williams told police that after a week, one of the babysitters called and asked if she could keep watching the girl. Williams gave her permission to do so.
