The University of Wisconsin men’s Ultimate Frisbee team repeated as national champions, downing Florida 15-9 Sunday in the title game of the UPA College Ultimate Open Championships in Boulder, Colo.
Florida had beaten the Hodags 14-13 in a regular-season meeting in Austin, Texas. But UW, which has nine outgoing seniors and grad students, turned the tables when it mattered, relying on a tenacious defensive attack that produced four turnovers in windy conditions.
The 2008 championship match will be televised June 8 at 7 p.m. Central time on CBS College Sports Television.
Ok, I need to say this.
WE HAVE AN ULTIMATE FRISBEE TEAM @ UW, BUT NO MEN’S VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM...WTF?
I don’t care if the former isn’t a sanctioned NCAA sport, the contradiction is mental. Anyone else have problems with the best players in state having to go to D3 UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, or leaving Wisconsin entirely to get pro-scouts to look at them?
ARGH!

Tried to find the stoned smiley
As far as baseball at UW goes, that might be a bit too American for that school.
GO MALLARDS!!!

Posted by on May 19, 2008 at 1625 hrsThis is not sanctioned by the university. They have a baseball club as well. http://uwclubbaseball.rso.wisc.edu/index.html. The students pay for everything that they do, they get no help from the University.
While I can’t say anything about the team and it’s drug use, but throwing that out there is just an old stereotype. I play PLENTY of disc related sports and have never touched an illegal substance. These guys are very good athletes, up there with soccer and track & field.

Scratch what I wrote earlier. I was thinking of Disc Golf, for which I would stand by my statement.
As far as “up there with soccer and track & field”......Those are two sports I know a lot about and while I don’t know that much about ultimate Frisbee; call me a skeptic.
Posted by on May 19, 2008 at 2207 hrsWow, did you just touch on the PERFECT subject there. I am actually a PROFESSIONAL disc golf player. PDGA #14324. Member since 1998.
I play a few disc sports, but Disc Golf is my main hobby. I have NEVER touched an illegal substance, and I know a lot of people who play that don’t either. While there are some people who do, there are a some people who do it in every professional sport (Baseball, Football, Basketball, etc.)
Disc Golf happens to be one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. Many parks departments are starting to install courses in their communities and parks. An entire course can run as little $10K, with little to no upkeep. We have at least 6 courses in the greater Milwaukee area currently. So please, don’t just lump all disc golfers together as “pot-smoking hippies”. Disc Golf is a great family sport that anyone of any age can play.
Ultimate is basically soccer with a disc. And while I don’t personally enjoy soccer, they are extremely in shape athletes. The same goes for a lot of Ultimate players.

Thanks, I learned something new today. I’ve been disc golfing before years ago (sucked at it), but I did not know about the stuff you showed me.
I will contend however that (from my admittedly limited experience) the % of high disc golfers is probably not to far from the % of drinking golf golfers. Of course Tiger is not drinking at the masters and plenty of golfers don’t drink on the course, but for a large % its a 4 hour bender. Of course from your point of view that is not the image of the sport you want to promote and I hope you’re right
There is a disc golf course near my home, but I have never seen anyone on it. I walk the trail past it early in the morning. I suppose those great athletes don’t wake and bake......
sorry, as hard as I tried, couldn’t resist....
I can joke like that because at least at this point you and I are the only 2 people reading this thread.
