D’oh!
Wick Building Systems said Tuesday it’s closing plants and cutting nearly 500 jobs.
Most of the job cuts will occur in Mazomanie, west of Madison, where the company has its headquarters.
Wick makes modular homes and pre-fabricated buildings and has been in business since 1960, according to the company’s Web site.
Company executives were not available for comment late Tuesday.
A Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development news release said 352 of the job cuts will be in Mazomanie and 142 will be in Marshfield.
I wonder if we can make some kind of analogy with the RV business picking up in Indiana and the prefab home business failing here.
The stimulus money was supposed to help the housing market but it’s failing while recreational vehicle sales are starting to grow. It once was thought that if RVs are selling the economy must be good because they’re a large ticket non-necessity item that needs market confidence for people to buy.
So there is confidence in the market enough for RVs but not for housing? Does there seem to be something seriously wrong with our political environment?
The area that the government is trying to help is failing and the area that government isn’t helping is starting to grow. I think the answer simply is to keep government out of private business.
Good question, are the larger 39’ 40’ foot RVs selling? the park models? I wonder if in the govements eyes this constitutes a new home and qualifies for stimulus credit ?
Most places you would get laughed out by zoning but in northern Wi and I am sure other rural areas of states you can throw just about anything up .
Trailer 39,000
Lot 10,000
Well and septic 15000
The lot alone costs more in most metro areas .
I have been wrong before in my opinion I just dont see any big ticket items moving.
I certainly agree so,let us keep the government away from the private businesses. They should mind their own business and leave the private corporations alone. Don’t they know that even themselves has great problems of their own to solve. They should repair their own debts, because in fact the U.S. debt is record high, and the American government is staring down the barrel of a $1.2 TRILLION debt load, for this fiscal year alone. Legislators have imposed a limit on things – no more borrowing after we hit about $12 trillion in debt – but keep in mind that as of now, an estimated 90% of our GDP is debt – which means that for every dollar that exists, about 90 cents of it is owed to someone else. They should meddle with their own problems.
Actually Crusher, you may be right. If someone has a travel trailer, or a houseboat, or an equivalent situation as their primary residence, it does in fact qualify for tax purposes as their homestead. not sure if it qualifies for the stimulus, but I can certainly see how it would. Just think of the money you would save on property taxes, utilities, garbage removal, home owners insurance, I wonder if it would cover the expenses of insurance, fuel, hook-up fees. Add to that the ability to move with the seasons…. Go RVing, is an option for many, especially retired couples.
Perhaps Doyle can come up with $70 M for Wick like he did for Mercury Marine. Money grows on trees in WI. Doesn’t it?
