White House Wants Barrett to Run for Governor

I think we all knew this already, but just in case you didn’t…

As Mayor Tom Barrett dilly-dallies over whether he should run for governor next year, he now must take this into consideration:

The White House badly wants him to enter the race for Wisconsin’s top job.

“They want to keep Wisconsin in Democratic hands,” said one top adviser to Barrett. “They see Tom as the best way to do that.”

[...]

Instead, White House officials have been privy to some private poll numbers that show Barrett beating either of the two main Republican contenders, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker or former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann.

  2. It is none of the White House’s business who runs for governor in this state. I find it offensive how much influence this Whitehouse has shown it is willing to wield over state candidates.

My, how we’ve come loose from our federalist moorings.

  3. Why doesn’t the White House just “appoint” Barrett as Governor? We’re headed there anyway, and it’s been proven the people of this country have no will to say they can’t.
All together now Baaa, BAAAAAAAAA. Frikkin sheep.

  5. Why would Barrett want to get into this race? Milwaukee elects mayor’s for life unless they do something REALLY stupid.  *cough* Norquist *cough*

Even if he gets in the race - it’s not a lock that he wins… plus he has to deal with a state budget that’s in shambles. Why not let a Repub in to take all the blame for the cutting and ride in like the white knight in 2014?

  6. PP - what time last night did she get the call and was it the prez or his chief of staff?

And what job did they promise her?

  7. So now we see Barb Lawton removing herself from the Governor’s
    Race for “Very Personal Reasons”.

Maybe she got the word that something may happen which she might not like and decided to leave while she can.

    Nothing like back room politics.

So now Barrett will ride in on his white horse to save the state with the help of the DNC

  8. Gotta do something to make up for throwing Creigh Deeds (Democratic Gubernatorial candidate in Virginia) under the bus wheels (White House does that a lot, don’t they?).

Like the Washington Post headline said, “Top Democrats Seek to Shield Obama in Case of Election Loss”.  Don’t want another Olympian embarrassment, I guess.

  10. From JSONLINE.COM

“Calls to Lawton and her campaign were not immediately returned. Her Capitol office, which is usually open to the public, was locked Monday.

Former Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said she saw Lawton several times Monday, but would not say why Lawton decided to bow out of the race.

“She looks healthy and she made decisions for very personal reasons,” she said.

Another Democrat who talked with Lawton on Monday said on condition of anonymity that health problems in the family were not a consideration.

Others who talked to her as recently as Saturday said she was talking as if she planned to continue her run.”

She got a call from the White House….
