Where In The World?

Here’s a mid-week submission.

Here’s a hint… it’s a city.  And it’s near some water.

UPDATE: Congrats to Captain Ned (again).  This is the ancient city of Avignon, France.  While it has a storied history, perhaps it is best known for being the home of the Popes from 1309 until 1377.  It remained in possession of the Papacy until 1791 when the French Revolution rested it away.

  2. Great.  Now I have to do is figure out which European river to run.

    @ Steve:

That city layout is pure Old Europe.  The only place of any size in the US that could match that haphazard layout is Old Boston.

And yes, I do enjoy these challenges.  Might have something to do with a certain Lt Col USAFR (ret) whose favorite dinner “discussion topic” was a random shout-out of some city name.  Sister & I were expected to respond with the proper continent & country in very short order.  Of course, he just loved to use the ancient & almost forgotten names of said cities.
