Of course. A “temporary” tax to give them time to figure out how to jack up other taxes.
A $10-a-car countywide vehicle registration fee could be one of the best options for keeping the financially troubled Milwaukee County Transit System intact, the Public Policy Forum says in a report to be released Monday.
But the vehicle fee, also known as a “wheel tax,” would be only a short-term measure to hold the bus system together until state and local officials can agree on a longer-term solution, such as a local sales tax, local gas tax or major increase in state funding, the nonpartisan research organization says.
It still befuddles me why some people think it’s OK to increase taxes on people who don’t use the service but unacceptable to ask those who use it to pay more.
Later on in the article they talk about using a wheel tax to pay for road repairs in the city. I see that as a user fee and more acceptable way to fund the filling of potholes.

My apolgies to John but I see it as a basic fundamental Government responsibility for government to pay for basic services like Police, Fire, and Transportation.
That being said it is their problem that they did not keep up on the needed repairs by not allotting money for that purpose, and spending that money on other things.
So the way I see it other things SHOULD BE CUT in order to repair the roads.
In short ITS NOT THE TAXPAYERS FAULT THAT THE GOVERNMENT MISUSED OUR MONEY
Posted by on May 04, 2008 at 1220 hrsone more thing. Have the geniuses taken into account the number of MilCO residents who will now register their cars in Waukesha, Racine, Washington or Ozaukee counties as a direct result of this tax?
Posted by on May 04, 2008 at 1239 hrsOr the number of residents who just don’t register their cars at all? Valid stickers can be had for the price of a metal snips.

Does that meant that I should get a tax break, because I have no kids, and so don’t need the schools. And can I have one for the jails, since I don’t live in one. And I haven’t called cops or paramedics or firefighters, can I have a break on that too?
Owen, it’s called being part of a society.
Posted by capper on May 04, 2008 at 2206 hrsAre those using the service not part of society? Should they not also pay for the services provided?
Posted by Owen on May 04, 2008 at 2248 hrsBeing a member of a society (an organized group of persons associated together for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes), means I should allow non-elected appointees to reach into my wallet and take money from me before I even see it?
Being a member of a community, (A group of people having common interests: the scientific community; the international business community.), I will do what it takes to improve my lot in life, and the lives of those that care enough to join in making their lives better.
If you wish to pay for a service extraneous to normal city service feel free to donate all you like. Do not take money from me and my family before I have a choice where it goes.
Isn’t that the real point here?
Posted by on May 05, 2008 at 0134 hrsThis year a “wheel tax” on the car, next year we will get each wheel taxed. Cut employees salaries, benefits, pensions and vacations to what the average taxpayer in Wisconsin gets and we will have plenty of money.
Posted by on May 05, 2008 at 0754 hrsTemporary tax? What is a temporary tax? Name one.
Posted by on May 05, 2008 at 0809 hrsYou have forgotten our temporary 5% sales tax instituted by Dreyfus in 1981. don’t you rememer that going away?
Posted by on May 05, 2008 at 0841 hrsI remember the toll booths in the Chicago area were “temporay”. That was in the 60’s.
