West Bend School District Buys Jackson Land

Yippee… we own land.

A resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of general obligation promissory notes of an amount not to exceed $425,000 was approved by the West Bend Joint No. 1 School Board during its regular board meeting on Monday night.

The resolution will reimburse the District for the cost of acquiring land for use as a site to locate a new Jackson Elementary School in the village of Jackson. The plot of land is located along Jackson Drive between Highway 60 and Hickory Lane and has been eyed by the board to replace the current building on Jackson Drive.

“It’s important for this board and future boards to get the Jackson school construction going to replace (the current) facility,” School Board President Joe Carlson told the audience.

The board, meeting in February, approved the purchase of a parcel of property for $650,00 with funds at hand that would be reimbursed either through passage of the first referendum question in the April 7 spring election or through borrowing under the revenue limit if the question did not pass.

Since registered voters of West Bend rejected the first referendum question, the resolution now is to borrow funds to reimburse the district’s general fund for the cost of the land. The borrowing will be under the revenue limit and will not increase the district’s tax levy. It also requires a 30-day waiting period during which time an electorate may petition the school district to take this resolution before the registered voters in a referendum, reported Brian Dasher, who is the administrator of finance and support services for the district.

The board approved the resolution by a 5-1 margin. Newly elected board member Tim Stepanski voted against the action.
