Good for West Bend.
Referendum campaigns no longer can be used to force the city of West Bend to mandate a private business’ benefit package or require a public referendum to approve public works projects.
Monday night, the Common Council approved for a second and final time two new ordinance sections banning any “ordinance, rule or regulation” to mandate employee wage or benefits for any private enterprise in the community or to supersede with a public referendum the council’s “exclusive power to authorize expenditures ... pertaining to public works.”
The vote was 8-0, one more aye than the ordinance changes received the first time around on Feb. 16. Because the vote then was not unanimous, it had to go through a second vote before the ordinance changes were enacted.
