Well, duh… if you were trying to cover up sexual abuse, wouldn’t you shred the reports too?
Former Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert Weakland routinely shredded copies of weekly reports about sexual abuse by priests, according to formerly sealed testimony released Thursday by an advocacy group for victims of abuse.
In depositions taken during the 1990s, Weakland admitted destroying copies of the reports in his office, according to the documents released by Survivors Network of those Abuse by Priests, or SNAP.
I love it! The Milwaukee Archdiocese always puts their hand out every year for their annual “Pedophile Fund” I mean the ‘er Stewarship Foundation Fund.
Are you joking me? I, like many Milwaukee area Catholics have been reading and biting our lips about all this church nonsense that has been going on for the past 20 years, (at least in my lifetime).
Now, I find out a newly appointed Pastor at my Parish was caught for “embezzlement”. That’s the word going around in our vestibule, anyway. Its funny how well the Church keeps their own protected.
Well here comes along yet another Pastor, our new one, asking for yet more dollars. As he mentions NOTHING about the past circumstance. So everyone follows each other in a row for communion, (sans the poor Kennedy Family) as most of us pass our hard earned dollars sealed inside Parish Sunday Envelopes into a cloth covered basket. Sad. Very sad.

Frankly, I cannot figure out why this story is in the newspaper (aside from the fact that Weakland is a very easy target.)
First of all, he shredded copies—not the originals. He shredded only the copies which were sent to him, no others. And they were shredded only to keep them from ‘viewability’ in his office.
So?
The Archdiocese still has the originals (and perhaps other copies.) No data is lost. Weakland does not have his copies.
THIS is news?? While I am NO fan of Rembert, this looks more like a vendetta by either Eisely or the newspaper.
Posted by dad29 on December 04, 2009 at 0928 hrsHow much does a retired Archbishop Weakland get in retirement pay? He should be paying back the money that the Milwaukee Archdiocese gave his lover not to talk.
Posted by (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 05, 2009 at 1116 hrsDad29 misses the whole point. What is so shocking about this is the thought of our Archbishop weekly reading reports of priests raping and molesting children much less shredding them. Weekly! Yea, I bet he didn’t want anyone to see reports of child rape and cover up in his office! Oops. Especially when the person in his office is someone he’s is buttering up for a hefty donation. Or the report on the desk just happens to be about YOUR pastor. No big deal? You got to be kidding me.
