Prevention magazine named Madison—1,300 miles north of sunny Miami—as the most walkable of the country’s 100 most populated cities. The list was commissioned by the American Podiatric Medical Association based on certain criteria. It ran in editions of the magazine released this week.
Madison beat out the likes of Austin, Texas (No. 2), San Francisco (No. 3) and Miami, which barely cracked the list at No. 98.
Factors contributing to the ranking were air quality, the percentage of people who walk to work, access to parks, number of athletic shoes sold, and (believe it or not) weather.
Number of beaches versus frozen lakes apparently was not a factor. Crime rate, unfortunately for Miami, was.
I am surprised that will all the hills San Fran scored so high but it is a beautiful city to walk around in
I went to law school in Mad-town and it is NOT walkable from late November through March. The sidewalks all iced over. I am not sure if they still do this but when I was there they stopped sanding the sidewalks and streets (they has stopped using salt long before I got there) because being an isthmus anything they put down ended up in the lakes. And I guess sand can cause a silting problem that hampers the fish or something … So anyway you had this hard packed snow that turned into a think layer of ice. It was like walking on a hockey rink.
I challenge anyone to walk up Bascom Hill it snows. Walkable my ass! Didn’t they consider weather??
Yes you could end up like that guy at the start of ABC’s Wide World of Sports if you were not careful on Bascom Hill in the weather
Joe cant see why you are complaining the Law school is only half way up the hill lol
Now if you had a class in Bascom Hall or one of the “Van” buildings you were screwed and had to walk all the way up lol.
Joe is right 7 months of the year Madison is a beautiful campus to walk on the other 5 not so good.
Apparently the people of Prevention Magazine have never been to New York City.
I’m sure that San Francisco got a high ranking due to the “proximity” of so many points of interests in so many different neighborhoods. S.F. is a small city geographically, so you can walk to a fine restaurant, book store, deli, upscale grocery store from just about anyplace you live. The baseball stadium is within walking distance to the Financial District and mass transportation. Besides, there is virtually nowhere to park. It is Manhattan with hills. Just a lot cleaner!
