Walk-O-Meter

Gee, where was the Doyle-O-Meter?

This one, which will launch Jan. 2, 2011, will monitor promises made by Governor-elect Scott Walker during the campaign and how well he is doing in fulfilling them.

Call it the Walk-O-Meter.

I think that both camps can agree that the MJS’ Politifact project is an utter joke.  They should give it up before they embarrass themselves further.

  1. I think we need to have a Bite Me meter for the Milwaukee Urinal-$#!&hole;.  Every time they publish crap like this we say,“Bite Me”.

  2. Or we could have a Manure-O-Meter for them ... just sayin’ ...

    hmmm

  3. The only problem is, in order to be embarrassed the paper needs to feel shame and care about what it’s readers think…neither of which the JS seems to have.

  4. Geez- you folks are awfully thin skinned. Why so upset over a newspaper keeping an eye on government? That’s exactly what they’re supposed to do. Many of you, yourselves, indicated an interest in keeping an eye on the newly elected R’s to see that they kept their promises. Why is it so bad that the paper is going to?

So you don’t like the PolitiFact feature. Next topic…

  5. If the journal were to be unbiased, they would actually do some research, display (by Jan. 1) ALL of the campaign promises by Walker and monitor the progress of each and every.

What the journal is going to do is pick and choose what they report.

My problem with this is the implication of FACT.

    I haven’t purchased a journal in years.  Every once in a while I’ll read Kane’s latest race-baiting column online.  I shouldn’t even do that…

  6. Smeety-
Then why do you care? How are you able to stand in judgment of a publication you do not read? You don’t have a horse in this race.

  7. Alright, allow me to correct myself.  I have read a lot of the politifact stuff…

  8. What the journal is going to do is pick and choose what they report.

Except they seem to be modeling their column on the Obameter which attempts to monitor up to 500 promises made by the candidate. The writers are also apparently seeking help in identifying as many Walker promises as possible, presumably in an attempt to avoid the “cherry picking” charge.

TJ, Deek, Smeety, hsgb, Owen, are you sure the opposition here is not just brazenly partisan?? It sure seems that way…

  9. The objection is not to the truth-o-meter.  The objection is to the bias with which it will be used.  MJS has shown its bias many times and we expect they will continue in that proud tradition of allowing their opinion to color the “news”.

  10. #9 - exactly.  I could see the following statements being made in three years:

‘well, 250,000 jobs were created in Wisconsin, but not all by Walker .... half promise kept’

‘Milwaukee-Madison train is dead, but Amtrak to Chicago received federal funding .... half promise kept’

  11. Shouldn’t accusations of bias be backed up with facts just as the politifact stories should be?

I’m not saying the series is the most valuable thing I’ve ever read. Essentially the series comes to the conclusion that politicians lie about as much as they tell the truth. Anyone surprised by that?

I don’t see them going any easier on Dems than they do on Reps. As a lefty, I’ve turned to that page and been disappointed just as often as I’ve felt vindicated. That’s not authoritative, but it’s something.

Isn’t there a chance that a series like this might make pols of both stripes (who are equally guilty, according to my reading of the series) be a little more measured in their comments? Like be a little more sure of their facts before speaking on the record? Maybe not. But it seems plausible.

  12. Just where would you like me to start with facts regarding bias?  I’m sure I and many others here can provide a wealth of facts.  You may not believe them, but they are what they are.

  13. How about with the PolitiFact series, since that is the topic of the post? I came up with a relatively weak anecdotal account of balance. It should not be hard to outdo that.

  14. That is the Milwaukee paper, why no Barretometer for the Mayor of the very city they have in their name?

Posted by Fred on November 29, 2010 at 0956 hrs

  15. The thing with an analogous Barretometer is that he hasn’t recently run for mayor as Walker has for governor. There is no similar body of promises made during a campaign to hold the sitting mayor to.

  16. There is no similar body of promises made during a campaign to hold the sitting mayor to.

BS, there are absolutely records of the promises made by Barret.

  17. Let’s start with Barrett’s attack on Marvin Pratt r.e. MMSD and that Marrett would do something about the dumping into Lake Michigan.

  18. Fine. Sounds good to me. But be careful not to do what folks were accusing the JS of doing…which is to say cherry picking.
