UWM Gets New Fee To Pay for Arena

Wonderful.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students will contribute $25 a semester to a fund designed to pay for an on-campus men’s basketball arena, under a budget approved by UW System regents Thursday.

The fee increase comes on top of a 5.5% tuition increase for all UW System four-year campuses that was approved as part of the university system’s annual budget.

  1. Might as well give the students a hands on introduction to the effects of the liberalism that will be preached to them by their professors.

  2. And conveniently, Owen opts not to include the next paragraph or two, which mentions that students at UWM voted in favor of levying the fee this spring.  You can’t love democracy when it gives you the results you like and bemoan it when it doesn’t.  Either love it, warts and all, or hate it.  Or should the students who pay the fees not be consulted?

Me personally, I opt to hate democracy much of the time.  To paraphrase Isaac Asimov, there’s a cult of ignorance that runs deep in America that believes democracy means your ignorance is just as good as my knowledge.

  3. When did I bemoan anything?  They voted for it.  They can have it.  I wouldn’t have.

...and RS conveniently changes “student leaders” to “students”. It was student government that voted to inflict this fee on student body. Most UWM students are commuter students who are uninterested in student governance, and likely did not vote for these goofballs. Student elections are notorious for extremely low voter turnout.

As I said, the students now have some great first hand experience with getting screwed by liberal government. Of course, if the student government wanted to be real liberals…. they would take out a massive interest only loan to be paid off in ten years, and thereby throw the whole cost on the backs of future students.

And what the fuck does this have to do with professors supposed preaching of liberalism, or liberal government?!?

  6. Hey Son, maybe get your facts straight before you criticize.  I will, however, cook your crow to order.  smirk

  7. Well ok then. 936 students voted yes…. making a grand total of just over 3% of the student body. Clearly a mandate from the masses. Bring on the fees.

Again, a good education for the students.

  8. THe $25 fee is not as bad as the 5.5% increase. These people are so out of touch with reality. Do they ever check to see where the starting wages of their graduates is going ?
DOWN. It is going to be impossible for these students to pay back $60/$70 thousand dollar student loans when making $26,000 a year. It will be the next sub prime.

  9. Was it a survey or a vote? What was the subject line in the email. Last week students protested because of higher fees.

Ever notice when the regents need student votes they fling it out there during finals or around the holidays, when plates are fully loaded and students are clearly focused in other directions they always strike.

Sounds like the same thing that happens in West Bend when a small group of people show up at a city council meeting and think they represent the entire community.

  11. The article states that the student government had approved the fee months before the poorly attended online “vote” was taken.

  12. Student governments never really represent the students. They’re typically comprised of a bunch of suck-ups trying to please the administration. Who in their right mind would give these fools taxing authority?

  13. I agree Jerry…. though I would replace “suck-ups” with opportunists.

Students who want a quick reduction in college costs should take a vote to dismantle and disband student government.

You’ve obviously not been on a college campus recently.

Better them than the tax payers.

  16. I love how so many people here complain that “well, nobody votes so that’s not really fair” or “student government doesn’t really represent the students.”

Um, yeah it does.  It represents the students who care enough to get off their asses and vote.  If you want to defend freedom and defend democracy, you better damn well be prepared to defend the right of lazy, apathetic individuals to not vote and let other people therefore make decisions on their behalf. (except SoL.  This doesn’t apply to him because he just wants to crawl under a rock and have government leave him alone.)

I know this is the same reason conservatives love to bitch about school boards and local governments not being representative of the taxpayers, but that’s just a crock.  It’s representative of the ones that bother to vote.  I do believe that you West Benders proved that in your recent school board elections.

If 95% of the UWM campus can’t be bothered to care whether someone wants another $50 a year from them, that’s a choice.  And that choice has a consequence.

Elections have consequences.  What a revolutionary concept.
