Ungrateful Little…

We have a couple of bird feeders in our back yard.  Even though the birds tick me off when they wake me up with their incessant chirping at dawn when we have the windows open, we like to have them around.  They are fun to watch and the kids love them.

Recently I bought a new bag of bird food.  For a long time we had Sun Flower seeds, which they loved, but the seeds that fell to the ground were growing and killing the grass under the feeders.  I picked up a 10 lb bag of wild bird food from Fleet Farm.  I filled the feeders a couple of weeks ago and… the birds hate it.  A couple of them come along every now and then to nibble, but it’s taking forever for the feeders to empty.

As I think about it, it pisses me off.  Those ungrateful beaked ingrates!  We spend our hard earned money filling a feeder with perfectly good food so that they can leisurely take in a meal and they turn up their noses.  The NERVE!

Next time I’m loading those feeders with rat poison.

  2. I hope you’re not serious about this!

  3. Considering the fact that one of the bird feeders belongs to our adorable little daughter who calls each bird by name, I highly doubt Owen is serious.

  4. Owen, Owen, where is your compassionate side?  Does your bird feeding problems relate to welfare, gov. grants, gov spending in general? Did you go through FEMA? Did you get authorization from Kohl and Feingold?  Maybe the problem is you are not open to change. Maybe put an Obama picture next to the feeder and that will solve your problem. Keep up informed on your status.
PS do not use the Obama picture to cover your lawn

  5. So, for months and months, you’ve been fed restaurant quality dinners at home. Angus steaks, stuffed chicken breasts, lobster, and the like. Suddenly, you start getting McDonald cheeseburgers and McNuggets thrown on your plate.

    You’re mad at the birds . . . why?

  6. You might want to check a few of my posts, I give some information on feeding and what seeds attract the birds you want.

Winter bird feeding (good for summer too)

Here is my “Infamous Blogging Window” from the outside.

Some general information on my flock.

To combat the problem with the seeds that fall to the ground, you have a few options. Go with a single seed, so the birds won’t dig through to find the seeds that like, knocking the other junk to the ground.

Another, better option if you want a variety of birds is to go with a “waste free” mix. This will have several types of seed that has the shell removed, so if they fall to the ground, they will not sprout. it is a little more expensive, but there is less waste, so it evens out.

Generally, the cheaper the seeds, the more Milo and other “filler” seeds it will have, meaning more waste.

    Enjoy ‘em Owen!

  7. Patrick, you are thinking way too much here. They are liberal birds. They will not accept anything less then debit cards to eat. Owen needs to to contact his two senators from Wisconsin for assistance.Good try. Have a GREAT week all.

  8. LOL Paul!

Owen, “I feel your pain” - especially did at 4:30 AM this morning when that chirping woke me up and they had the unmitigated gall to poop all over my deck, adding insult to injury…sigh.

But still, gotta love ‘em. wink

  9. Owen you cheapskate.
You balked at paying three times as much for black oil sunflower seed, so you got some cheap old mill-seed at wally world that was stale as shit and sucked to begin with.
Your birds deserve better, and you care.

  11. Are the squirrels eating your food?  They can be fun to watch, though, not as cute as a bird.

  12. Living on the Wind is the best book I’ve ever read about birds. Mainly about migration, it really puts all those birds in your backyard into a bigger context—you’ll discover that some of smallest might have flown 5,000 miles before winding up at your feeder. You find out what makes them migrate, where they go, how coastal development is affecting the ones that travel to South America, even the aerodynamic benefit of the V-formation, and on and on. Highly, highly recommended.

  13. I recall a time when the same group of birds insisted that red beans and rice were not good enough for them, they wanted vouchers for “better seed”  On a different day they lined up for seed at 5:00 am and then fought among themselves to get to the seed.  What a surprising Orwellian comparison.
