GM bankruptcy plan eyes quick sale to gov’t.

The government plan to save GM?  Bring back that model of government-run auto production…

  1. In other news, the government has announced plans to retain the services of advertising giant Hewey, Dewey and Louie to handle the multi-thousand dollar ad budget fr the new firm…..

  2. It might not be as alarming as you are implying, Jed.

    FTA
plan for a bankruptcy filing involves a quick sale of the company’s healthy assets to a new company initially owned by the U.S. government

Which assets?  What is the charter of the company?  Details are lacking.  But this is Reuters so that is expected.

I have no great liking for government run corporations.  But I did work for one (RTC) that did the work it was chartered for and then expired.  They can work.

  3. Road test of the Trabant:

    0-60 in… OK, 0-40 in 3 minutes 25 seconds. (Wind aided)

  6. We can only be so lucky to get a car like a Trabant.  Thge car pictured actually looks like a safe car compared to what kind of car that GM and others will be making to make them fuel effecient.
Obama is committing murder by making cars less safe for the sake of fuel effeciency.  I guess this is the new liberalism.

You are wrong, Dan. All vehicles will still have to meet NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which are in most cases more stringent than those in Europe and the rest of the world.

  9. USMotors is going to be an adventure.  I’ve always bought American (other than one MG midget), but I’m not driving a GM or Chrysler ever again.  On the other hand, once they start making ugly eco boxes, maybe enough of the Birkenstock/Prius crowd, will start buying GM, to offset those of us who feel that buying Nissan is now more American than buying GM.

I would however love to have that Trabbi.  Looks just as unsafe, crappy, yet fun, as my old MG.  (You become a really alert driver in a car made of aluminum foil, with a lawnmower engine, and a bumper and trunk so low as to be nothing but a speed bump for most SUVs.)
