I’ve been watching The Tudors on Netflix for the past few months and finally finished the series. I must say that I am quite impressed. As a history junkie, the production did an admirable job of capturing the reign, characters, and the age. It took some liberties as necessary with the medium, but stayed very true to the subject. Surely this was a relatively easy task given the natural drama manifest in the reighn of Henry VIII.
The one thing that I did find very interesting was the treatment of Henry VIII’s weight. They graphically showed the ulcers and infirmaties that led to the king’s obesity, but never showed the result. The production never had Henry’s girth reach its legendary and historically known proportions. In the end, I think that it was OK because excessive makeup and fat suits would have distracted from the character portrayal, but it was a risky move since everyone knows the historic portraits of Henry the Portly.
In any case, I highly recommend The Tudors if you are so inclined.
Owen, I am on episode 32 and agree with you 100%....probably first time. Great series!
I am on Season 2. Really enjoy, but my Netflix watching has been hijacked by Breaking Bad.
I grew to love the series and the 2nd season is amazing, mostly thanks to Natalie Dormer’s Anne Boleyn, but I’m still a little bitter that they combined Henry’s sisters into one person and ruined his little sister Mary’s true love story, which is certainly one of the more romantic in history.
They did a great job of showing his personality (crazier by the year) , his athleticism as a youth, and how bewitched he was (for a time) by Anne.
I was waiting for the fat suit but agree that it wash"t needed.
Great stuff
WOW, Owen, Dave, Smeety, and Mark in complete agreement. Can swarms of locusts be far behind?
I guess I’d better check this out.
