Trick or Treat

Halloween is on a Friday this year.  Instead of letting normal people trick or treat on Halloween when it happens on the weekend, communities around the area set trick or treating hours FIVE DAYS before the holiday.

Ridiculous.

  1. Glad to see Wauwatosa is still being dumb with their Sunday 1-4 “tradition.”

When I moved to MN, people couldn’t believe that kids weren’t allowed to trick or treat on October 31. I suppose some kid, in some city, in some long ago decade got hit and killed by a car at night, so now that’s the way it is.

  2. Not only that, but some of them are set from 1:00 to 4:00.

    I second your “ridiculous” comment.

  3. So you’d rather stay home on a Friday night and hand out candy to a bunch of kids? Frankly - I’d rather be out having dinner, or enjoying a quiet evening at home after a long work week.

  4. The state known for Ed Gein and Jeff Dahmer is weird about Halloween.  Go figure…

  5. Yeah, I guess we like to spread our gore and gruesomeness around.  No need to confine it to one day.

  6. Packers have a bye on the 26th, it’s not like there’s anything better to do.

  7. It was a reaction to a real event - someone actually got killed (and about 30 miles from West Bend) on Halloween and this was before the days of Sex Offender Registrations (of course, my concern is that we haven’t figured out how to register sex offenders that haven’t been caught yet).

35 years ago this Halloween that a young girl was abducted in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, sexually assaulted, and then murdered.  An infamous case, occasionally cited when the state of Wisconsin ponders policies on how to deal wtih sexual predators:

The sexually violent persons law is sometimes known as the “Gerald Turner Law” after the man who was convicted in 1973 for the sexual assault and murder of a Fond du Lac girl, who disappeared while Halloween trickortreating.

  8. Here in Bay View we lobbied for night time trick or treating a couple years ago and won.  The decision was made to hold the event the last Saturday in Oct., I beleive, to make it easy to remember from year to year, and to be able to reuse yard signs from year to year.

Sure, it’s a bit early this year, but NEXT year, we head out on the actual holiday.  Also, since it’s on a different day than the rest of the city, we become a magnet for every kid in town.  I consider this a plus.  Have to buy more candy, but the streets are PACKED with ghouls and goblins just the way is should be.

And I sure do remember 1973.  Poor Lisa French.  I think I will always remember that name.  Every kid in NE WI was scared to death. And Gerald Turner is out now, I believe.  No fair.

  9. I stand corrected.  From The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

    June 3, 2007
    Jim Stingl

Forever a child in our memory, Lisa French would have turned 43 this weekend.

Turner was returned to prison in 2003 for 15 more years after he violated his parole by possessing pornography on his computer.

  10. It was a real event, but do Gerald Turner and others like him would only commit sexual assault and murder on October 31st after dark?

Ban trick or treating completely then.

  11. Bunch of kids running around, some maybe unsupervised or become “separated” momentarily from their parents or siblings (try to identify your child dressed up like the latest cartoon character in a crowd of others in the same costume), and under cover of darkness?  Seems like that could be “opportunity” with a capital O for someone with the motive to commit such a crime.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Means,_Motive_and_Opportunity

In US Criminal law, means, motive, and opportunity is a popular cultural summation of the three aspects of a crime needed to convince a jury of guilt in a criminal proceeding

No, trick or treating does not need to be banned, but precautions should be taken (also known as “Crime Opportunity Reduction”).

  12. So we’re trying to trick sex offenders?  Are they the only people who don’t know we don’t trick or treat on Halloween?  Boy, we’ll get them.  Suckers.

  13. Does anyone here offer “adult beverages” to the parents of trick-or-treaters?

I have a friend in Tosa that says lots of people in his neighborhood do.

I thought I might try to introduce that tradition to my new neighborhood.  I just built here and have been here less than a year, I think it would be a good way to meet my more distant neighbors.  (or at least find out which of my neighbors are the no-fun cranky types.)

I’m also going to experiment this year.  I can’t in good conscience offer up only unhealthy crap for all the little kids to become dependent on sugar-laden garbage…

So I thought I’d offer kids a choice between a candy bar or a toy.  I thought maybe little squirt guns for everyone?  I’m trying to brainstorm ideas?????  Maybe I should just go to the store and browse.  Anyone else do any alternatives to candy?

I’m sure giving them a choice many will probably opt for the candy, but then its off my conscience.

  14. My daughter has gotten quite a few pencils - not the standard yellow, but the ones with Halloween graphics or based on TV shows, movies, etc. (Disney Princess, that type of thing).  I imagine a party supply store might have Halloween oriented party favors that don’t cost a fortune for a bulk quantity.  y daughter enjoys that kind of stuff a lot more than candy.

  15. One of our neighbors puts out booze for the grown ups.  He had shots one year, and another year he had bottles of beer.

My kids would like something other than candy.  My 7 year old is a health nut, so she would really like to get a toy instead of more candy.

So, uh, xxpilot, where do you live?

  16. Foxwood Drive, New Berlin!  Come on down!  wink

Thats a good idea MHT, maybe I’ll get some disney thing for girls and something boys would like.  Those styrofoam airplanes you can throw around or something…  hmmm…

This could be fun. I’ll have to make it something better than candy. I don’t want to be “that guy down the street that gave out shitty halloween crap!” lol

Would sticking “Barr 08” stickers on the side of all the toys be bad form?  wink

You should dress up as an acorn and give out absentee ballots.
