Holy crap, the editors of the MJS and I agree.
School Board members Thursday placed much of the blame on the state, and, yes, there are flaws in the way MPS is funded and in the mechanism for funding the private school voucher program. But of the district’s $1 billion budget, 80% comes from state and federal sources, as Tim Sheehy, president of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, points out in an op-ed in tomorrow’s Crossroads section.
That’s not chump change; furthermore, state aid has grown faster since 1990 than the district’s expenditures, and serious financial challenges are posed by the district’s obligations for employees’ post-employment benefits.
Taxpayers are going to be understandably reluctant to send more money to MPS, especially when so few of them have any confidence that the district can educate children adequately. Yes, there are shining examples of success, but they are still too few to make a real difference to most families in the district.
What’s needed is change, not projections. It’s time to dive into the water.
