Thompson To Run For Senate

Ed Thompson... for State Senate…

Expressing concern that state government is hampering job creation and failing to protect seniors in a down economy, Ed Thompson announced he will run as a Republican against incumbent Kathleen Vinehout for the 31st State Senate district. The 31st State Senate district includes all of Trempeauleau, Buffalo, Jackson and Pepin counties and parts of Monroe, Pierce, Dunn, Eau Claire, and Clark Counties.

  5. I didn’t realize my opinion was so important to you, Jim grin

What do I think?  Ed Thompson is a bit of a nut.  Vinehout is a bit of a nut (remember that wacky poem during her campaign?).  It will be an entertaining race to watch.

  6. Alright another popularity contestant that gives talking points about being anti-big government but in the end will be just the same as the rest of them.  Maybe if he gets elected government will only grow by 8% rather than 10%.  That’s change I can believe in.

Jim, you must be new here.  I’ve never known Owen to be shy about expressing his opinion.

  9. “Will the real Thompson please step forward?”

You are kidding right?  You want Tommy back?  This is the problem with the GOp today - stop living in the past.  Tommy is done, over, gone.

  10. Dear Tommy,

Thanks for being a great governor for Wisconsin. Your state needs you again. Now that you are making millions on the talk circuit and being on corporate boards, can you PLEASE give your brother Ed a couple hundred thou so he moves to Arizona?

    Thank you,
    Wisconsin

  11. I should be more clear.  The problem is all of these old Tommy backers living in the past and dreaming of yesterday.  The party has good leadership and is feilding some pretty solid candidates.  Get on board with whats going on.

You shouldn’t go back but at the same time, but you certainly can learn from the past.  The GOP did a hell of a lot better during Tommy than post-Tommy.  I’ll take Tommy and Jensen over whatever the hell is passing for “leadership” in the state party today.  Would that be the brothers Fitz?  Would it be Reince Priebus, or is he too busy helping Michael Steele turn the national party organization into an absolute mockery?  Is there someone else pulling the strings?

  13. Yeah the National Party is hurting - probably gonna win Virginia, solid shot at New Jersey.  The Dems have no candidate in Wisconsin, can’t raise any money and despite having the Presidency and the Congress can get a bill passed.  Yeap the national party is just terrible.

  14. Always good to see one of Reince’s coworkers standing up for him.  Was his legal assistant not available to follow up, or is this just something that associates have to do for partners?

Your mistake is in thinking that Republican success is somehow defined by Democrats floundering.  Virginia’s been a toss-up state for two generations.  That a crook like Corzine is likely to win speaks either to the people of New Jersey or the continued incompetence of the GOP state party there.  And Tom Barrett will be in your gubernatorial race in due time.  What’s the hurry, after all - every day he’s not in and Walker’s running is just one more day that the Dems can focus on throwing punches instead of playing defense.

Meanwhile, Kagen’s on pace to coast to reelection next fall in a district that still leans GOP, Obey’s going to run over Duffy, Kind will slaughter Kapanke, and the GOP once again has no decent candidate to run for U.S. Senate.

Yeah, your boy Priebus is striking fear into the hearts of Democrats everywhere.

When the GOP picks up seats in Congress next year (none of them in Wisconsin), just remember that those 15-20 seats will be seats you never should have lost in the first place.  In the meantime, if you know anything about web design or media strategy, maybe have your secretary shoot Reince a memo.  That “What up?” blog was about the worst idea I’ve ever seen.

  15. I’m sorry do I have to quit my job to have an opinion?  Yeap, I work at the same law firm as Reince.  I guess that automatically makes me (and the 200 hundred plus other employees here) a shill for him.  I couldn’t possibly have a brain and opinions of my own.  Unlike you, I post under my own (non-fictions name) because I only post what I think is correct and I am not afraid to have my comments associated with my name.  I dump on the GOP when they deserve it and dump on the Dems when they deserve it.  I can’t help it if there are some legitimate bright spots right now in the GOP.  Are their problems in the GOP?  Sure in fact, I pointed one out just a few posts ago.

  18. As a Trempealeau County GOP member I am not at all happy with Ed Thompson as a candidate, a bit like the NY23 race.  I’d like to pick the GOP candidate via the primary at the grassroots level,  not the “know it all” party bosses at the state level.

  19. Ed Thompson should run. . . . as a LIBERTARIAN! He is NOT, nor has he EVER been a Republican.  He has spoken disparigingly about Republicans, and is obviously not Conservative.  It is completely inappropriate for the Republican Party to use GOP Campaign dollars on a Libertarian. Why does the local party or grassroots have no say?  Why is the candidate hand-picked without even allowing a primary?  I will be writing in a candidate.

  20. Barry Goldwater was a Libertarian in many ways and Reagan had many :libertarian ideas as did Jack Kemp.
I worked for Ed when he ran the first time. I consider myself a Liberatain conservative.
Ed is just what the GOP needs except for some Pro-Choice ideas that I disagree with.
We agree 85% of the time.
Ed Koch said:  “If you agreee with me 60-70 % of the time then you should vote for me.  if you agree 100% of the time see a psychatrist”.
Look at the talent in the senate, what way would you describe them?  What ideology is Dale Schjulz or Scott Fitzgerald?  what have they ever stood for except to get re-elected?

  21. Look at the talent in the senate

Where is this “talent” of which you speak? In either party?

if you agree 100% of the time see a psychatrist”.

You are starting to scare me Dohnal,.

Keep it up and I will have to start looking for a shrink.

  23. So Bob, if you’re supportive of Ed Thompson’s candidacy do you agree with him about 9-11 conspiracy theories?  Are “Truthers” real patriots, like Ed said?  Do you think there’s room in the Republican Party for those that endorse 9-11 conspiracy theories?

Posted by James Wigderson on October 30, 2009 at 1015 hrs

  24. Is there room in the Republican Party for birthers, Jim?  How’s that lunacy any more forgivable?  Or by your logic can we just start writing off vast portions of the teabagging right as well?

Ed’s kooky, but have you ever spent time in that part of the state?  I remember sitting through a committee hearing once where I had to watch folks like Bobby Gronemus and Jeff Wood seriously entertain the notion that the UN was secretly conspiring to regulate land use decisions in Wisconsin.  Whether it’s poor schooling or something in the water, Ed’s the right kind of crazy for that part of the state.

Ed’s got some wacky theories about 9/11, Kathleen Vinehout writes terrible poetry, and half the people in that district probably think that there are black helicopters flying overhead that are following their every move.

Grab the popcorn, it’ll be one hell of an entertaining race.

  25. i grew up in that area, finest people in the state.  If you want wacky, read RS’s and the other nuts that live inside the beltline and in the Capitol, theories on people and government. .
      Dreyfuss was right.
