The Ever Dangerous Barrel Shroud

Tucker Carlson puts gun banner Carolyn McCarthy on the spot, and she’s unable to answer a basic question about her own anti-gun legislation.  Classic.

You’d think she’d bother to learn what a barrel shroud is, since she’s sponsoring a bill to ban them.

BTW, a barrel shroud is a metal piece that fits over the barrel to dissipate heat.  They’re usually seen only on shorter barreled shotguns.

  1. Quite obviously she’s not into the fetish.

  2. So what’s the point of banning that little piece of metal?

Don’t you know that no legislator ever writes any of these bills themselves?  They are just elected, they don’t actually do any of the actual WORK!  smirk

  3. Yeah Kate, just like bankruptcy “reform,” Medicare Part B, etc.

  4. I saw that last night too. She really should have known what it is, or at least fessed up more quickly.

Anyway, is the bill specifically about barrel shrouds? Why would you want to ban them? I’m guessing something that dissipates heat lets you fire more rounds in less time?

  5. That’s just funny.

Gordon, barrels get hot when you fire them repeatedly, but it doesn’t render the weapon nonfunctional unless you fire fast enough to melt the barrel.  Even at that, with modern metal engineering, you would have to fire thousands of rounds in a short time span to reach that point.  It’s not a realistic concern.

Most people use barrel shrouds because they look cool and it helps keep them from burning the crap out of their hands if they accidentally touch the barrel after firing a few times.

  6. My god, we are trusting people like this to write laws that will protect us?  They have no clue on what they are writing and supporting.  Ban barrel shrouds? Like that will prevent crime and save lives… hmmm

  7. YES Ban the barrel shrouds so the guns don’t look so SCARY

  8. Make all guns pink, instead.

  9. They must not look “SCARY”.  Not so funny.  The “94” ban addressed appearance- flash suppresors- folding stocks-pistol grips- bayonet lugs- and, of course, the “10” round limit.  The law did not stop sales of AR-15’s or any other semi-auto.  It just regulated what it looked like.  The magazine ban was a joke.  The law banned sale of new high capacity mags- it did not apply to existing inventories. Manufacturerers just did huge production runs prior to the ban.  After the ban, the mags were still legally available- although at a much higher price.  The “94 ban had no impact on crime whatsoever.  But, beware!  The proposed ban is horrible.  Your are warned.  If passed, it will hurt a lot of owners.  So, just maybe, you all ought to be making calls to your legislative reps and senators!

  10. McCarthy is a Roman Catholic.  She really wanted to ban the use of the weapons muffled by the Shroud of Turin. The confusion is easy to understand.

  11. Barrel shrouds are handguards, and are used on a lot more than just shotguns.
