The ACMs

I watched the ACMs last night.  I usually like the show because it’s mostly performances with a few awards thrown in.  My observations:

This year the nominees were a bunch of blond girls and George Strait.  The blond girls won.  George Strait wrote a song about it.  Wanna hear it?  Here it goes.

You can tell who performs regularly and who doesn’t.  So many of the singers were out of breath and sounded like crap.  Among them:  Taylor Swift, the chick who sings that ridiculous song about Johnny and June, and, sadly, Kenny Chesney—who I know does get around but sounded like he needs to do more cardio.

On the other hand, there were a lot of singers who moved around and were still able to sing in tune:  Rascal Flatts, Reba, George Strait, Sugarland (though you have to turn away from the TV or risk throwing up from obnoxious facial expressions), Miranda Lambert.

Carrie Underwood is going to blow out her throat soon.  It’s getting hard to listen to her sing out of the back of her throat.

I like the “In Color” guy.

The Zac Brown Band should have been able to perform.

Miley Cyrus?  Ugh.

The Entertainer of the Year award used to mean something.  But as long as they let teeny boppers vote on the Internet, Carrie Underwood and the hottie of the day are guaranteed to win.

  1. I agree - the internet voting pretty much eliminated George Strait.  What is this the Kids’ Choice Awards?

  3. :zzdeadhorse: AMEN CYNICAL!  If Rascal FATS is country, I am Mr. America.

  4. I saw Carrie Underwood in concert a few months ago, she was great.  Opening act Little Big Town was SUPER!!  I can’t stand Sugarland either.

  5. I don’t like country music.  I don’t “get” country music.  That being said, it’s no surprise to me that these types of awards shows are nothing more than popularity contest.

The same thing that is happening to country music happened to pop music years ago: video.  Back in my day, pop music was Journey, Reo Speedwagon, Van Halen, and Aerosmith.  But those guys were not “video friendly”.

They have since been replaced by the Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears, Maroon 5, and Fall Out Boy.  Welcome to my hell.

  6. It would have been entertaining to see John Rich on stage at the same time that Jamie Foxx was up their with his “Country finally has a black man and a black man is running the country” BS screed.

Carrie Underwood’s version of “I Told You So” is really pretty good - and country, but they are going to blow her voice if they don’t stop the amount they have her in the upper ranges.  But I thought Brad Paisley should have won entertainer of the year.

  7. If this show was based on Country talent Emmylou Harris would win it every year, even if she didn’t do anything that year.

I don’t think the Stones won a grammy until 1986. That has to tell you something about these award shows.

  8. Apparently Jamie Foxx never heard of Charley Pride.

  9. George Strait moved around?  I don’t believe that!  wink

That’s not a knock on George Strait, he’s one of the greatest, but I’ve just never seen him move.  I swear he’s done entire concerts with his boots glued to the stage.  When you are that good though, it doesn’t matter.

The thing I like the most about country is no matter how hard they try to make it pop around the edges, it will always lag miles behind on the “pretentious scale” compared to the style-over-talent lip-syncing over produced studio-artists that compose 90% of the Bilboard hot 100.
