  1. 1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - The Chines are doing it…
    2. The Truman Show (1998) - We are living it…
    3. Gattaca (1997) - The Democrats are in the white house, so they’re living it.
    4. Iron Man (2008) - The japanese are working on it.
    5. Jurassic Park (1993) - Madisons got it covored.

  2. Jurassic Park?  Really?  Then why not Star Trek?

  3. Star Trek involves matter compilers (still very far away), “Beaming” (possibly impossible, plus there are some ethical dilemmas), and faster than light travel (impossible).  JP, while also far-fetched due to the natural breakdown of DNA molecules whether they are preserved in amber or not, is at least plausible with just a mild advancement in genmoe sequencing knowledge.

  4. Actually, Jurassic Park might be closer than you think: http://in.news.yahoo.com/139/20081104/981/tsc-dead-mice-frozen-for-16yrs-resurrect.html

  5. That’s a good list.  What would (and should) disqualify space movies from plausibility would be artificial gravity.  They incorporate it as it’s as common as indoor plumbing.  We’re nowhere near that yet - if it’s even possible.  But 2001 did it “mostly” right (there were some inconsistencies) - the gravity exhibited was the result of the ship spinning (centrifuge effect), or using magnetic boots.

  6. Thoughts on “plausibility”:
    1. I’m pretty sure the KLM stewies have been wearing those outfits for some time - pillbox hats, fer cryin’ out loud.
    2. Jim Carrey’s life is an ongoing show, and he’s always performing, just like in Truman, for anyone who will watch - awareness has little to do with it
    3. Glow-in-the-dark pigs! More government control in America than we’d every dreamed, and that’s before Bush leaves office! More government control of glow-in-the-dark pigs than we’d ever dreamed, and that’s before Bush leaves office!
    4. Honda’s latest gadget, anounced this week, robotic legs (jet packs optional)
    5. I don’t know about this one for sure, but I’ve long suspected that Sandra Bernhard/Roseanne Bar/Howard Stern/Michael Jackson/Dennis Rodman and others wandered outside the park a long time ago, and no one’s had the nerve to corral them back

    And
    6. Only 5 geeks have shown up for this thread so far?!? Where is everyone?

  7. “Iron Man” no.  Andromeda Strain [novel and original film], yes.

The reason Iron Man isn’t plausible is not the technology, silly as it is, but the arms being sent to terrorists with the company’s name still on the boxes.  Or the weapons being stolen from the military that are marked as company, not US or US Army property.  Everyone knows the terrorists import weapons in flour and sugar sacks labeled from various charities.

As for Andromeda Strain, we have sent satellites into orbit to collect microbes as Project Scoop was designed to do, and such bugs have been collected and brought back.

  9. Two more suggestions:

    - Brave New World (we’re WELL on our way right now).
    - iRobot
