Thank God for Tommy Thompson’s Family

“It’s time for new voices and new faces,” says Tommy Thompson, who claimed he would like to run but that his family nixed the idea.

There was a whole lot of talk about all the good things he did as governor, but nothing about jacking up spending. Hmmm….not the right crowd for that, I guess.

He used a lot of “we” and “us” when referring to the Tea Party movement.

Tommy made no endorsements and did not say anything about Harleys, eagles, or Packers.

And to whoever screamed out “DON’T DO IT!” right before Tommy made his official announcement: You rock!

  1. Ok…but then who will be our real candidate then?  The three guys right now in the race all leave a lot to be desired.  I don’t like any of them.

I agree that Tommy left a lot to be desired, but he would have won and he would have voted the right way.  With Tommy out and a guy like Pataki in New York declining to run, those are two GOP pickup Senate seats that might stay Dem.

Tommy! just earned a lot of respect—he gets it, now the rest of the GOP does.

  3. Try being independent enough to choose your own candidate Steve, that’s what this movement is about. Tommy is so full of himself he couldn’t bring himself to endorse anyone, and the state GOP is so clueless they don’t even know who’s running against Feingold. We can no longer depend on the old guard to make the right decisions, so the responsibility falls to us, which is how it should be anyway.

  4. I, too, would love to see a true conservative in Feingold’s seat.  The problem is we don’t have one who can win.  The two candidates we have running now can’t beat Feingold and Leinenkugel is a Democrat.  Thompson, with all his baggage,  could certainly beat Feingold ang give the seat to the Republicans.  I see that as the least of all the evils we have before us.

  5. Our ballots are a problem when we only have a vote for candidates and not one against. While I would not vote for one of the Repubs running against Fiengold I think my biggest choice against would be Fiengold.

We should be able to vote either for or against candidates on the ballot.

  6. ofr -

If we want to make changes, maybe the best one I’ve heard of is a “none of the above” option that will force a new election with new candidates if NOTA wins.

To make it work really well, we could have a combination of NOTA and instant run-off voting (single transferable vote) where there is one election, no primary, and you get to vote for as many as you like in order of preference. If there are five candidates and you are willing to swallow three of them, you put your preference for each and give NOTA the fourth priority. Votes are counted. If no one has a majority after the first round, all candidates who did not get votes of any priority on more than half of the ballots are eliminated. Those votes are redistributed by the preference of the voters.

If still no one has a majority eliminate the person with the fewest remaining priority weighted votes until someone or NOTA has a majority.

This won’t happen because it would help third party candidates. Republicans and Democrats may not agree on much, but they do agree that they do not want to make it easy to break up their cosy duopoly.

  7. Owen,

I was one of I’m sure many who yelled out “Don’t do it”.  Some others were “Go Away” and “I may need new boots and shovel for this”.  I have some film of the event, including some counter-protesters, I’ll put it together tonight and share it on Youtube if you’re interested.

I could go for this if the selection for Senator would then return to our State Legislators if it won.

  10. The"Don’t do it"may have been me.  I’m (sorta) famous.

to say there are no viable conservative candidates is bogus.  Wall has money and is rapidly becoming well-connected in conservative and GOP circles.  Dave Westlake OTOH is a good guy with a good message, but no plan.

  11. yeah, this will be fun.  tommy, who would have won, is out, and you guys want a loser like Wall to be the sacrificial lamb.

and there is no viable alternative candidate.  wall, westlake and leine are all losers and leine is even a Dem.

  12. It isn’t about winning a popularity contest.  Find a candidate that truly believes in small government and deep deep cuts in spending and taxation.  Just settling for someone who can win is how this mess got created in the first place.  He’s got the correct label next to his name so he must be OK right?

  13. OK, Greg.  You’re right.  Thanks.

  14. Greg, where are Feingold’s poll numbers? Oh, yeah… That’s right.
