Talking About Schools

Kristin Kubisiak has an article about the West Bend Schools in which I am quoted.  I have a correction.

Unemployment in West Bend is high — about 14 per- cent — and the community is hurting, Robinson said.

Unemployment is down a bit, but it’s still in the double-digits.  11% I think?  I’ll look it up later.

“It’s important we talk about these things,” Robinson said. “Local government affects our lives and spends our money. If we really want to focus on improving our lives through the government, it’s at the local level where we can make an impact. I’m glad we have a good discussion. It gets heated now and then but ultimately we all want the same things — we just have different ideas about how to get there.”

  1. July 2010 Unemployment rate = 10.3% (11.3% last month, 13.7% year ago).

    http://dwd.wisconsin.gov/dwd/newsreleases/2010/100825_lmi_local_july.pdf

Note that the unemployment rate is known to be understated, as it only reflects those how are actively seeking employment.  Figures do not include those who have settled for part-time work in lieu of full-time, or those who have given up on looking for employment.

For instance, Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis shows 792,800 jobs in July of 2010, compared to 801,300 a year ago, a loss of 8500 jobs.

That’s why the number of jobs is a better indicator than the unemployment rate.  That is also why the unemployment rate is expected to rise as the number of jobs rise, because when there is a greater chance of being hired (more jobs), more people will move into the “seeking employment” category.

  2. If your actions reflected those words, we would have a dialogue.

Instead, we have a tone, set by you, that promotes anger and encourages other to believe that the district has motives other than doing the best job they can for the kids in the district.

“Habitual bitcher” read the hat my uncle wore fishing. What’s your hat size?
Mine is 8 1/4 (you know what they say- big head , big…...shoes)

The truth is that the WB school district is the best “value” in the state. But then again, Mona Lisa was a little chubby.

That guy you mentioned in the paper, the one who has a genuine conversation with people and isn"t 100% sure of his opinion being correct in all matters, That guy,I’d like to meet

Your hand picked school board members have disappointed you because once they are in the job, the Owen Robinson/Charlie Sykes/mark Belling solutions somewhere from the top of the grandstands don"t seem as practical as when you have to actually do the job

the guy who writes the columns and never takes his pal Glen to task for his complete abandonment of the school district in fiscal matters,,That guy doesn"t have any answers, he just like to watch things burn.

But he just might get a new hat

  3. Mark,

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.  Embrace that.

  4. Compared to the district’s consistent, outspoken critics, Mark Maley attends a lot more district meetings, reads a lot more district documents, meets a lot more district representatives, and he brings in impressive amounts of private donations for the district, ...and he’s a successful businessman.

If he doesn’t know what he’s taking about when he convinces people to donate to the WB district cause, than he must have some awesome charisma.

  5. Maley must be tone deaf. The tone I have been hearing the last few years is an arrogant board not very tolerant of public opinion. How dare anyone ask questions, you have the audacity to ask us for data, we will dictate and you the people will learn to follow the drum beat we issue.

We need a few more left nut jobs in Madison setting policy so we can hold the one local conservative accountable for all there actions.

Jason if you crawl any deeper up Maley you better call it a colon screening or people will start to talk.

  6. Crusher, Mr. Robinson has me convinced it all about the Benjamins.  Maley delivers.

Questions: All the answers are there for the taking.

    Nice classic butt-kissing insult.

If I thought you had any answers I would ask questions. 90% of the time you post data and stats on issues not even being discussed. Scroll to the top and read the original post, did anything there mention MM ?
Please note this site has no dueling banjos playing, so if you want to get all warm and fuzzy with your fella head over to the M. Cow if your longing for hand holding and affection.
