Wow.
BELOIT (WIFR)—Illinois is now the only state that doesn’t allow concealed carry. This after the law took effect in Wisconsin today.
Today we stopped by a gun store up north and asked people about what’s changing.
We visited Addie’s Gun Shop this afternoon in Janesville, Wisconsin and it was very busy!
Many customers filtered in and out showing their gun permits, looking to buy a hand gun. Some customers were even picking up guns they had ordered six months ago.
The concealed carry law now allows anyone over 21 to carry a gun in the State of Wisconsin. By law, a person must have a permit to buy a gun. If they choose to carry the gun they must also carry their permit.
In order to obtain a gun permit, there are a series of steps a person must take including a background check, and anyone with a felony is denied. Police are already preparing for some differences in handling those with a weapon.
Um, NOBODY was “showing their gun permits” because none have even been mailed yet. And no, you do NOT need permit to buy a gun.
Such. Bad. Reporting. ![]()
Actually, JSOnline reports that 80+ permits were issued today to people who walked them into DOJ hq in Madison.
Considering the reporter uses the word “gotten”, I would not have high expectations.
“The concealed carry law now allows anyone over 21 to carry a gun in the State of Wisconsin.”
Anyone?? Umm…no. First, open carry without a permit was allowed before enactment of the law, and second, you can’t carry if you’re a felon.
Shoddy.
Bad Law
The bill was properly introduced, vetted, and debated by both Houses of the Legislature, received bi-partisan support on passage, and was properly enrolled, enacted, and published into law.
Therefore, it is good law.
Mark- how is it a bad law? Are you expecting Wisconsin to be different from all the other states that have concealed carry.
After the novelty wears off, this is likely to be a whole lot of nothing. Carrying a gun is a PITA, so it will drop off.
I think the Castle Doctrine is a bigger deal in advancing the freedom to defend yourself.
Rick,
Thanks for asking .
Where does this rank in terms of pressing issues in the state?
I have no issue with hunters and their guns.
I question one second of time debating whether we should really have people carrying guns (concealed or otherwise) into
-taverns, schools, public meetings where tempers can flare, churches.
This is individual rights on steroid’s and is dangerous .
Again, I chose to live in Wisconsin, not texas where a gun rack in your truck is a matter of manly pride.
Call me crazy but i don"t see how this makes us better, just as crazy as 48 other states.
Its a bad law whose time has come.
Again, Mark, how will we be different? Has concealed carry been shown to be a problem in those states?
As for carrying in churches, see this story.

I will grant she was a hired security guard, but how many churches have those? There also was the guy who shot up the church group in New Berlin a few year ago. http://m.host.madison.com/mobile/article_45ac1e24-5f07-5b12-8df1-06afc2a180b3.html
Mark, you can still find refuge in IL although I wouldn’t recommend Chicago as there are LOTS of people carrying guns there without permits, background checks, training, etc.
As others have commented, your fantasy nightmare about law-abiding citizens shooting everything up doesn’t happen in the rest of the country, why would it happen in WI?
