Good.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Carlos Santiago said Friday that the university will discipline students who tried to enter the building that houses his office a day earlier, saying the university will not tolerate assemblies that become violent.
Santiago said in a statement that the school will pursue charges against the 13 students and two other protesters who were arrested Thursday on suspicion of unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and throwing hard objects.
UWM Police officers said the protesters punched them while trying to rush Chapman Hall during the rally against the rising cost of college and against budget cuts for university departments. Officers discharged pepper spray into the air to get students to back away from officers who had been pushed into the doors of the building, school officials said.
“For these individuals who demonstrated no respect for our campus community, we will pursue legal action and, for the students, we will review whether any university rules were violated that require additional action,” Santiago said.
Discipline by the university could range from a verbal reprimand to expulsion.
If they are expelled, then they won’t have to worry about the cost of education.
Disorderly conduct and throwing hard objects (?) are actually valid violations of the law, but unlawful assembly? Really? Didn’t Santiago ever hear of the First Amendment? “... or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
There’s no excuse for attacking cops (and it’s one of the dumber things to do anyway), but the university administration needs to get a clue about legal protests.
Throwing things wasn’t very peaceful. And, well, they’re idiots because they were protesting the wrong people. They should have been protesting the Board of Regents. Cheers to Santiago for doing the right thing.
In the same category as disorderly conduct, unlawful assembly is also an offense against the public peace. You may be charged with this offense if you are a part of any assembly that attempts to block access to buildings, roadways, schools, property, or dwellings.
If you fail to disperse from an unlawful assembly, you could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 9 months in jail and fines reaching up to $10,000.

Way to go Santiago. It’s time for the kiddies to learn about the consequences of your actions. For some of them, that lesson may be more important than the ones they were getting in class.
If they are expelled, then they won’t have to worry about the cost of education.
If they’re expelled they will have received their lesson. Whether they will learn from it is another matter.
Expel ‘em down to Texas agriculture college where they can wear jackboots, puffy pants and a brownshirt with military insignia. That’ll teach ‘em.
Yes, Joe…or they can become the thugs of OFA, sucking from the taxpayer tit and giving nothing in return. You’d probably like that better.
Oh…and those brownshirted, jackboot wearing folks? They’ve given their lives for generations, so you can call them names. I know that has little meaning to you, but I had to say it because it means something to me.
Dickhead.
Torches and Pitchforks.
Expel ‘em down to Texas agriculture college where they can wear jackboots, puffy pants and a brownshirt with military insignia. That’ll teach ‘em.
Ignorance on display, for all the world to see. If liberals had any shame they’d be embarrassed by you….
So what exactly are they protesting? They want more tax money to pay for their education? Maybe they should start protesting about the compensation of uw employees. Doesn’t the dean get over $300,000 a year a mercedes and a lake home? And what exactly does he do?
If liberals had any shame they’d be embarrassed by you….
Surprised it took this many comments before this thread was converted into anti-liberal rhetoric. Way to go, guys!
George, it’s because you make it easy.
Better response to the whiny entitlement creatures
Welcome to your first little taste of the real world kiddies. We who pay your way don’t give a crap.
Odd, I did not see any professors out there protesting for lower pay and less benefits in order to help out the little socialists that their rhetoric on the lectern has helped to churn out.
You don’t like the tuition? Sign up for community college and get some skills for a real job, as that degree in political science with your minor in sociology isn’t going to offer you much in the way of a job now that Obamanomics is the law of the land. Then you can work and pay taxes to help fund college for the next bunch of whiny, lazy, selfish little socialist children.
hey, family guy, shut the fuck up, you ignorant slut
George needs a cup of coffee this morning.
And hey…pay for those little socialists’ tuition, would ya? The rest of us don’t want to.
TFG has a point, I did not see any professors or administrators standing up willing to give up their paid sabaticals or TAs or fall-back jobs/tenure, cars and residences. I mean you can’t expect them to actually teach the ungrateful kiddies. They have important things to do - like write grants to get government money to study if alcohol makes the ungrateful kiddies more promiscuous.
Academia is a complete racket and needs to be seriously looked at for big-time cut-backs.
What can I say George… either you are one of the selfish little socialists, one of the lavishly paid uncaring staff, or you missed a dose of medicine. In any case, I always consider that sort of a response to be a verification of what I said. If it makes you that angry, it’s got to have close to the truth.
Steve and neomom are both right. We are tired of paying for the education racket and all the research schemes that bring us an endless supply of foolishness.
Work for your education kiddies, that will make it more valuable to you, and you’ll learn extra lessons at those jobs that feeding off the taxpayers table won’t teach you. Lots of grown ups are doing just that… some work a job, some take loans, some join the military… those folks are really learning about life and the American dream. Kudos to them, it’s not easy… certainly not as easy as protesting and whining to get it for free.
