The proposed state purchase of the Rainbow Springs resort property “is outrageous,” given the state’s financial woes, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker said today.
The state can’t afford the $10.8 million price, even if it comes from money set aside in the state Stewardship Fund, Walker said. The state Department of Natural Resources announced the purchase plan Wednesday, which needs the approval of the Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle.
The 970-acre property straddling the Waukesha County and Walworth County line would become part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit, under the DNR plan.
Walker said the purchase would add to the state’s overall debt and possibly lead to cuts in state aid to local government.
What a hoot! So this is how the Walker 2010 campaign starts—with him bashing a conservation purchase. Doyle is going to beat “Dropout Scott” like a rented mule. Name the last Milwaukee County candidate elected Governor!. (Hint—it hasn’t happened since the 1940’s and Scotty isn’t going to break the curse!)
Posted by on August 07, 2008 at 2058 hrsIs this the same Walker that wants to move the mental health complex, even though that would be more expensive than even tearing down and rebuilding the current facility? And of that move, what happens when the lease is up, and the County has no where to go, cuz Walker sold off the property? We will be at the mercy of the landlord and will be forced to pay whatever price they demand.
Of course, Walker is doing that on a no-bid basis, the third time to my knowledge that he has done it, and each time, it is more expensive than if he had the scruples to do it the correct way.
And this is the same Walker that predicts a $12 million defecit when Family Care kicks in completely. He might have been able to do better, but he laid off all the accountants.

Nice to see Doyle’s priorities are clear.
Posted by prosqtor on August 07, 2008 at 2310 hrsThere is no reason for the state to buy more land. They have enough of it as it is. That includes local, state and local governments. There is no reason why the state needs this land. You may bash Walker, but, come on capper and wally, give one reason why the state needs this land. Why does the state need the land? You think they don’t have enough land. How many square miles does the State control without paying taxes?
Bashing Walker shows how little you really care about the subject.
The question remains and needs to be decided by the governor and legislature. How much land should the state own? Obviously not 0 and obviously not 100%. We have to have a policy as each land purchase while doing some good also takes taxes away from schools and local govnerments.

How many of those positions could have filled with the $1 million Van Hollen chose not to use?
Dan-
I am simply pointing out a small snippet of Walker’s wasting of tax dollars. To deny that shows your cluelessness and lack of interest in the truth.
Posted by capper on August 08, 2008 at 0759 hrsGood to see Capper hasn’t lost his venom towards Walker. Sorry he has hurt your little feelings...but it’s getting so very old. But go ahead, ignore the issue at hand, Capper...spending more tax dollars on land we don’t need.
Posted by on August 08, 2008 at 0836 hrsCalvin,
You’re contradicting yourself. Doyle cannot be bad for spending extra money on land we don’t need, if Walker is good for spending extra money on land we don’t need.
Is that so hard for you to follow?
Or are you just comfortable with being a hypocrite?
Posted by capper on August 08, 2008 at 1653 hrsIsnt it worth waiting for propety prices to go down further before purchasing? Property prices are still set to go down around 10%.
