Sporcle of the Day, 29 June 2010

Countries of Europe—47 countries in 8 minutes.

I got 46/47 the first time.  Damn you former Yugoslavian states!

  1. Ack!  39/47.  What was killing me was spelling and trying to get their name right.  For example, Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic.  That’s what I get for living in history books grin  That, and I can’t spell worth a darn.  I also struggled with the UK.  Great Britain?  England?  Britania?

I admit, though, that I would have missed the Vatican City.  Also, I object to Turkey being considered part of Europe.  It’s in Asia.

  2. I know what you mean about the spelling.  Wait until you have to spell Kyrgyzstan.

  3. I got them all but that man, that map’s not very helpful for the tiny ones.  The first 46 went easily and then I spent three minutes trying to figure out what i missed - a certain speck-sized city-state on the Mediterranean.

And yeah, you’d think they’d set it up to give people the benefit of the doubt.  It really won’t accept “Bosnia” for “Bosnia and Herzegovina”?  Or “Great Britain” for “United Kingdom”?  Brutal.

  5. 40/47. Also had problems with all the little ones on the mediterranean.  Also stupidly missed Iceland and [seriously] Russia…  I got most of the former soviet republics but missed F-ing Russia.

Isn’t the UK short for “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”?  So just saying Great Britain would leave out Norhtern Ireland.  And “England” would leave out Scottland and Wales as parts of Great Britain.  Although I could be wrong about all that.  Vague recollection from a hung-over double-decker bus tour.
