Snow, Snow, Snow

We got about two or three inches here in West Bend so far.  I went out to snow blow.  Wendy and the kids came out to help too!  It was fun.  I did our driveway, the sidewalk past the empty lots near our house, and half of the neighbor’s driveway (they already did the other half).  I also had occasion to go about West Bend a few times today to run some errands.  It continues to flummox me that so many people who live in Wisconsin drive like such morons in the snow.  As a service to you, here are some basic laws of physics that apply to driving in the snow:

1. Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it.

2. Force is equal to the change in momentum (mV) per change in time. For a constant mass, force equals mass times acceleration, F = ma.

3. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

  1. I took my teenage son out today in the subdivision to let him get some experience in the snow….  personally, I think that should be a requirement for a driver’s license in this state… taking the test while there’s fresh snow on the ground.

  2. Here in VT we subscribe to a Fourth Law of Snow-Driving Physics:

All-season tires are useless,  Go buy 4 real snow tires.

  3. Depends on the tire Ned, My All-season tires do just fine in the snow here in West Bend (I’m in town…)

I was about town today and it seemed like WB plows just couldn’t keep up with the snow fall Washington and Main were both snow covered and packed down. It wasn’t slippery if you took your time and kept your distance but I saw a number of drivers take corners to fast and almost collide with someone.
