I always wonder what compels people to do stuff like this.
Word on the street.
Over 45 signs belonging to Ed Duquaine, candidate for 3rd District Alderman, were stolen overnight.
For the second time, Corazzi and Vaneerden signs have appeared without permission on private property located at 18th and Decorah.
Realistically… signs are almost meaningless. People love them and candidates need to supply them, but almost nobody cares. I’ve observed one instance of a sign swaying a vote. We had a neighbor once who told us that he voted for someone for whom we had a sign because he didn’t know who to vote for and he knew we were conservatives. I’m sure that at least that many people decided to vote against the candidate for the same reason.
So why mess with people’s signs? I guess some people are just jerks.
Here’s a local citizen/blogger that seems to have an obsession about Duquaine & his “house for sale” sign:

Ed’s house was just marked down to the bargain price of $449,000 last week—although I see he took down the FOR SALE sign.
It took a few commenters to maybe convince him of his flawed logic that by Duquaine selling his current home in District 3 would automatically mean that Duquaine would be moving out of the district. It hadn’t occurred to him that one can sell a house in a District and buy a different one in the same District.
Maybe that fascination about signs means something? Just saying!
Owen - you are undervaluing signs. They are not really a vote driver but because people like to support winners they do drive contributions. There are tons of people who give money to the person they think will win. It happens in primaries and generals and one of the things that people remember is seeing all of those signs up in people’s yards. Signs are an indicator of relative support.
In rural areas some folks like to post their signs on public land. In my mind the candidate should be fined. Train your supporters or pay up.
Stealing signs is tampering with an election if you ask me. If you come on my private property its tresspasing and theft or damage to property.
Again in rural areas, its a way of knowing who your friends are…or rather who your candidates friends are….and are not.
