Shoot. Now I have to change my work habits.
Taking regular lunchtime siestas could increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, according to research.
The study of 16,480 people, found those who napped were 26% more likely to get the condition than those who did not.
Several factors which may be behind the link included disrupted night-time sleep and an association between napping and reduced physical activity.
Studies like this always seem to be more misleading than actionable if you ask me.
In all likelyhood “daytime napping” is probably a symptom, not a cause. Or course that doesn’t grab headlines, but…
Not-withstanding “26%” increase doesn’t mean much either.
According to the CDC 7.8% of the population is estimated to have diabetes. I’m no statistician, but it that means the risk of diabetes is about 7.8% (and the people who “nap” are already affecting that statistic) then in reality the “increased risk” that is indicated by people who nap would take the percentage of people with diabetes from 6.2% to 7.8% (a 26% increase of 6.2% = 7.8%)
I guess that wouldn’t make a good headline though. “people who nap during the day have a 1.6% higher chance of being diabetic”
Kinda like saying buying 2 lottery tickets doubles your chances of winning.

Pfffft…it’ll take alot more than that to scare away this gambler.
Please note Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic in the U.S. and is mainly caused by poor diet and lack of exercise.
Those who siesta because they are lazy slobs will likely be the 26% that get Type2D.
Those of us who bust ass and are up and at em early in the AM deserve a siesta because we still have a lot to do for the rest of the day/night. So there.
