Shedding Jobs

Ouch.

Compared with the largest metro area in each of the surrounding states, only Detroit is losing jobs at a faster rate than Milwaukee.

  1. We got some good news with the Oshkosh Truck contract that was awarded.

It always amazes me how loyal our Blue State democratic contingent is to the national party yet how little money this State gets compared with others.

I understand that for a variety of reasons we have almost no military bases, but all our reps from Gaylord Nelson to Zablocki to Kohl have been terrible at bringing back our tax-dollars.

  3. Who’s in charge of Milwaukee County?

Who’s in charge in the city of Milwaukee, Capper?

  4. General,

It did not specify city.  It said Milwaukee area.  Which leads to back to my question.  Who’s in charge of the County?

  5. More about “Who’s in charge of the state” AKA Governor Dipstick. Since he and the legislature are the ones that make the warm and fuzzy tax environment that companies are tripping over each other to get here for.

  6. Walker has LOWERED taxes, but I digress.  Governor Doyle has jacked up taxes, fees and regulations it’s not wonder why businesses are leaving.

  7. General,

It did not specify city.  It said Milwaukee area.  Which leads to back to my question.  Who’s in charge of the County?

Good question, who is it?  Is it Walker, or is it the county board and the employee unions that seek to undercut his every move?

  8. The Board sets the policy, Walker runs the county.  When he is not violating the law, that is.

  9. Capper,

You wouldn’t, by chance, be a Milwaukee County union employee?

Just a shot in the dark here…

  10. Ayup.  But it doesn’t make my statements any less true, now does it?

  11. you haven’t really made any statements…

  12. Ach, I was thinking of Owen’s other post, about the furloughs.

    This one was too easy.

  13. Capper - what’s your beef - Walker cut out your backdrop or something?

The County Exec has little to do with jobs - his job is to provide goods and services to county residents at a reasonable price. I’d say Walker has done pretty well there. Since the parks were up for a national award.

  14. Check out his blog, then ask yourself if the words ‘John Hinkley Jr’.  mean anything to you..

Posted by Smeety on July 01, 2009 at 2335 hrs

  15. I’ve never been eligible for the backdrops, lifetime health bennies or any of that.

The parks awards were not for best parks, but best plans.  Anyone over five knows that plans and reality don’t often concur.

If you think Walker is doing a good job, you’ve been listening to too much talk radio and not paying attention.

Best example:  Income maintenance (food stamps, etc.).  Walker screwed it up so bad that the County faces a class action lawsuit and had to have the state come in and take it over, which we are paying for, but dearly.

  16. What do food stamps have to do with jobs leaving Milwaukee County?

Posted by Smeety on July 01, 2009 at 2341 hrs

  17. Business consider more than taxes (it’s true, Owen).  Walker fails in the services dept.

Posted by capper on July 01, 2009 at 2346 hrs

  18. Can you name one private-sector company that has criticized Scott Walker’s ‘failure in the service dept.’?

Posted by Smeety on July 01, 2009 at 2349 hrs

  19. ... if you can make it a private sector company that makes it’s money from a source other than gov’t that would be a bonus…

  20. PBA, they moved because transit is dying.

Posted by capper on July 02, 2009 at 0002 hrs

  21. Are you referring to the Pro Bowlers Assn?  They never stated they were moving because of lack of extended transit….

    I’m calling shenanigans!!!

Departure of USBC leaves Milwaukee feeling washed out
    March 15, 2008 @ 11:36 PM
    The Herald-Dispatch
Milwaukee rolled a ball into the channel in an attempt to keep its bowling heritage in the city. The United States Bowling Congress, bowling’s governing body, has decided to move its headquarters from suburban Milwaukee to Arlington, Texas.

The congress, which has more than 2.5 million members, had been in Milwaukee for more than 100 years. The decision to leave the city that helped make bowling famous is a tough one, coming one week after Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement.

USBC cited the cost of doing business, taxes and health care costs as factors for moving. The congress plans to team with the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America. They plan to build a $14 million international bowling center.

  23. You’re correct, I was wrong.  It was Miller.

Posted by capper on July 02, 2009 at 0016 hrs

  24. You are quoting an article you wrote.

And your reference to better transit is O’Hare…..

    seriously, dude .... don’t bring a Popsicle stick to a knife fight…

Posted by Smeety on July 02, 2009 at 0021 hrs

  25. Are you saying the airport isn’t part of transit.  And they don’t keep threatening to privatize O’Hare, which will only drive up costs.

The only popsicle stick is the on in your ear.

Posted by capper on July 02, 2009 at 0029 hrs

  26. that is too funny.  So if I can follow your logic:

    - City of Milwaukee is fine.
    - State of Wisconsin is fine.
    - PBA left Milwaukee because of transit issues.
    - Oh wait, no it did not.
    - Milwaukee County sucks because Ohare is not being threatened to be privatized.
    - Somehow privatization of the airport will drive up costs to those who use it; reducing tax burden on the entire county not as important as increased costs.  (for the record, I don’t necessarily endorse either idea)
    - Miller Brewing is leaving Milwaukee because Scott Walker threatens to privatize Mitchell Field.
    - John Hinkley Jr.

The threat of privatizing the airport is the best you’ve got?

Once again, ten cents worth of logic and three Leine’s Classic Ambers…

  29. Business ARE leaving and it is because of the extreme high taxes and over regulation from all levels of government.  Period.
