U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) railed against a plan by the state Legislature today to drain money from the state’s Real ID plans to help shore up the state’s budget shortfall.
Last year, legislators voted to raise the driver’s license fee by $10 to pay for the federal Real ID law, an anti-terrorism measure written by Sensenbrenner that is supposed to make licenses more secure. Now, lawmakers plan to put the $22 million raised by the fee hike toward the budget deficit.
“That in my opinion is a breach of faith with the people of Wisconsin,” Sensenbrenner said today in a stop at the state Capitol.
So does Nass, Kedzie, and Pridemore, .
Real ID compliance was pushed back to 2010. Maybe this is Wisconsin’s way to say they don’t think it’s ever going to happen.
Gee maybe Sensenbrenner ought to have the feds fund it since they’re the ones mandating it.
Just add it to our tab if he doesn’t want to actually pay for it.
Sensenbrenner needs to come to grips that he violated the Constitution by passing an illegal federal mandate to accomplish what he could not get his state to appropriately do at the state level. All he really wanted was for Wisconsin to not hand out drivers licenses to illegals. Wisconsin accomplished this eventually like all States need to - through state legislation. Now the rest of us are left to deal with his unconstitutional mess. He certainly tried to make the end justify the means, but our Constitution can’t be treated that way. If we allow it to be, we will lose our gun rights, our privacy rights, etc etc, and we can’t afford to let REAL ID set that precedent. We all have God given rights, not rights based on a piece of biometric RFID tagged plastic!
