The agency charged with investigating state Capitol misconduct would have to ask legislators—who they may be investigating or planning to investigate—for money to conduct those probes, under the state budget passed by the state Senate last week.
Republican Sen. Mike Ellis, of Neenah, and Common Cause in Wisconsin both objected to an item in the Senate-passed budget that would require the Government Accountability Board to have its annual budget for investigations approved by the Legislature.
When the Board was created in 2007, Ellis said, it was allowed to spend whatever is needed to conduct investigations of possible ethics, misconduct or campaign-finance violations involving elected state officials.
The thought of any non-elected groups having unlimited access to taxpayer dollars for any purpose is downright troubling. Do we do this for police? Justice Department? Fire Department? Of course not. There’s nothing wrong with the GAB having to set a budget and work within it. If anything, it’ll force them to use resources wisely and not throw money useless or vindictive investigations.
