Saddam Loyalists Turn on al-Qaeda

It’s a good sign that Muslims are turning on al-Qaeda in Iraq.

U.S. forces have begun arming nationalist guerrillas and former Saddam Hussein loyalists—and coordinating tactics—in a marriage of convenience against al Qaeda radicals in one of Iraq’s most violent provinces, senior U.S. commanders tell CNN.

This new alliance, a result of the deepening divisions among Iraqi insurgent factions, was on display earlier this week at a highway intersection in the town of Tahrir. There, a group of some 15 insurgents publicly chanted: “Death to al Qaeda.”

“The al Qaeda organization has dominated and humiliated Sunnis, Shiites and jihadis. It has forced people from their homes. They can’t get enough blood. They killed many honest scholars, preachers and loyal mujahedeen,” one of the group’s spokesmen read from a written manifesto.

It’s a sharp turnaround from just two months ago when the same insurgent forces were focused on fighting U.S. troops and driving them out of Diyala province, about 40 miles north of Baghdad.

  1. Now if only we could get that kind of cooperation in the fight against violent crime in Milwaukee and our other major cities.

  2. Well that sucks, how are you guys going to spout the whole “When will moderate muslims stand up?” bullshit to get your brown person hate out now?

Oh, yeah, Milwaukee.  I guess that’ll work.

  4. Here comes one one of your fine liberal commentators now Owen.

We we’re saying all along that there was no connection between the Bathists and Hussein and al Qaeda. Where’s the surprise?

  5. kr, live in your own little world of denial. Us who know what is going on and actually read documents that have been declassified will protect your uninformed ass.
I don’t know what burden of proof you and your leftist friends have placed on verifying colusion, but I would think that your salvation, the u.n., standing in front of a warehouse and counting 500 tons of chemical weapons that have never been recovered would be proof enough. The hospitilization of the number three AQ leader recieving surgery, and a prostheses in an Iraqi hospital before we were even in Iraq should be proof enough.
You know what, you are so narrow minded that you can not even quantify facts.
I’ll tell you what. Let’s come to an agreement, we’ll protect your sorry ass, if you would just stop undermining the war effort. Deal?
    I didn’t think so.
Now you talk about baathists saddam and aq.
You don’t even have a clue do you?
You can’t even seperate the players.
Baathists? nice try at intellectualism but you fall shy once again.
At least understand the conflict before you come here and make a fool of yourself.

  6. Nice rantin’ and ravin’ ched and from the above post, you look like you are vying for Mickey’s old slot of residentent raving insulter.

You haven’t got what has been going on in Iraq from the first second, only swallowed what was spoon fed to you by the Bush administration. Your so-called proof above doesn’t prove jack, only how willing you are to be led around by the nose.

Hussein and Bin Laden were sworn enemies. EVery expert on this topic know that.

Bottom line is the Iraqi’s want all foreign interventionists out of the country. Now this is what we and al Qaeda have in common.
