Another lesson in “every vote counts.”
A canvass of the closely contested Democratic primary for the 97th Assembly District found that Ruth Page Jones defeated Steve Schmuki by just eight votes, a little more than a 1% margin.
The canvass was completed late this afternoon by a Board of Canvassers in Waukesha. Schmuki has three days to file for a recount of the vote with the Government Accountability Board’s election division in Madison.
The vote tally was 645 for Jones and 637 for Schmuki.
Jones is the WEAC candidate. Expect them to pour money into this district in an attempt to unseat Kramer a.k.a. “The Lone Clapper.”

Man, your opinion of WEAC is even lower than I thought. What is that seat, 60%, 65% GOP voting? You think WEAC is going to start pouring dollars into a Dem candidate there?
Um, she didn’t really ‘win’ per se. This was the canvas, she still has a recount left to go.
Two things:
1) She actually lost a vote since the primary night, she was up by 9. She’s now at 8.
2) She has - good friend of Doyle and Democratic Election Hacks everywhere - Michael Maistelman on retainer to help with the recount as insurance.
You know, there’s this amazing blog run by this guy named “James Wigderson” who’s mentioned this all before I’m sure. ![]()
