Running Sucks

In my 5 years away from the Air Force, they got with the program and re-instituted a physical fitness test.  Part of the test consists of a 1.5 mile run.

I miss the Air Force bike test.

The last time I took a PFT was at the end of basic training in July 1997.  (We didn’t have to take them on active duty.)  I ran the 1.5 in about 9:30.

I feel like I’m going to throw up.

I’m been working on getting back in shape for a while now.  I lost 41 pounds to get back below my maximum allowable weight.  I started running again, and I’m up to 5 miles every other day.

It’s a good thing I’m not a smoker.

I ran a balls-to-the-wall, fast-as-I-can-do-it 1.5 today.  11:26.

I feel like I’m going to throw up.  Again.

Just goes to show what 10 years and 30 pounds can do to you.

  6. Who cares about this?  I have been realizing that blogs are an ego trip to talk about whatever is in the blogger’s life at any time of the day/week.  Really, who would want our every minutes’ thoughts made public?  Maybe I should start a blog about going to the re-cycling place today, before, I did…..and….....and…....and, oh yes, I also talked to ........... , and we discussed the very important topic of her…....and then I told her about my .........., and then we said, “.....” before we hung up.  Wow!  Put me on the Sykes preferred list!

  8. Jed-

I am admittedly the last person in the world that should comment on physical fitness or training, but I would think that you could make better time if you ran without your balls to a wall.  That would encumber you greatly. Not to mention the high risk of mortal pain.

  9. Jed,

Mix your training.  Long runs 80% of the time and hard sprints mixed with faster than average speed the other 20% of the time.  Your recovery time will be quicker and your endurance will develop faster.  Those long runs need to be at about 75% of your max.  The faster stuff needs to be around 85-95% of max.  Remember, a great workout is when your breakfast is at your adams apple, but you can’t have one of those every time you work out or you will get injured.

  10. Jed,

So is your 11:26 within their test requirements?  And, why did the Air Force have a bike test?
