Ricin, Guns, and Anarchy - Oh My!

Scary stuff.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN)—Officers who found the deadly poison ricin in a Las Vegas, Nevada, extended-stay hotel room also discovered firearms and an “anarchist-type textbook” with an entry about ricin bookmarked, police said Friday.

Two tests had confirmed the substance found was ricin, and that a man who was staying there has been hospitalized for more than two weeks and is in critical condition, police said Friday.

The 57-year-old man, whose name was not released, summoned authorities February 14 and asked to be transported to a hospital because of difficulty breathing, Kathy Suey, deputy chief of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, told reporters.

  1. The anarchist-type textbook profiles the individual or group quite nicely for me. It’s good to know that we’re probably dealing with a misguided idiot, rather than a larger plot. That’s not to say these people aren’t dangerous, though.

  2. Oh, and FYI to any other misguided idiots: those books are often written with bad instructions, intended to backfire.

  3. I can understand the Vegas police wanting to downplay this but am puzzled by the FBI’s statements that it is not terrorism related.

What the hell is their definition of terrorism?

  4. What the hell is their definition of terrorism?

Beats me, but my definition is someone who attempts to frighten people, or an unofficial enemy combatant.

  5. Now that I am a Las Vegan, if they, the FBI, used the word terrorism, it will scare people away from the casino and the other attractions.
There is going to be a lot more to this story.  It is not easy to make Ricen.  Apparently it is easier to make Anthrax or mustard gas.  So, this just not 1 poor soul.  Also, they did not find any supplies to make the stuff in the room.  He brought it into the hotel.  Where did he get it and what did he intend to do with it?  Our media is reporting some of it, but they are not going to report it as terrorism, even if it is.

  6. If someone is found with vials of ricin, firearms and an “anarchist-type textbook” it is not characterzied as a potential terrorist threat?  Is ricin not a potential tool of mass murder?

This is a very strange story.  If they claim there is no terrorism link (which is the obvious assumption) they should give their alternative hypothesis.

If this guy was middle eastern Ashcroft’s fear meter would have been cranked up and the mass exodus of tourists would have started within 24 hours.  The feds better have this story all straightened out.  If it turns out this guy is part of a bigger threat, there is going to be a huge backlash for keeping it mum.  Or at least there should be.

This of course takes precedent over any loss of life?

  11. pjr, almost any otehr place than here.  You are right, but here in Vegas, they have to keep up the image of a perfect place.  No matter that theyhad several shootings on the Strip the last few months, including guy who opened up in a casino.  But all is well, nothing to see here is their motto, I believe.
