Republicans Push for Ending Ethanol Mandates

Finally.

Twenty-four Republican senators, including likely presidential nominee John McCain, on Monday called for a halt to the expansion of ethanol production as a response to rising food prices.

The senators urged the Environmental Protection Agency to restructure rules that would require greater production of ethanol from corn by 2022.

“This subsidized (ethanol) program - paid for by taxpayer dollars - has contributed to pain at the cash register, at the dining room table, and a devastating food crisis throughout the world,” McCain said in a statement.

Will the Dems and the rest of the Republicans get on board?

  1. Here’s hoping.

  2. I wish McCain had the guts this time around to stand up in Iowa and forcefully tell Iowans they are wrong on ethanol. But, he decided to pander to Iowans and the Global Warming crowd.

“I support ethanol and I think it is a vital, a vital alternative energy source not only because of our dependency on foreign oil but its greenhouse gas reduction effects,” he said in an August 2006 speech in Grinnell, Iowa, as reported by the Associated Press.

You have a new Farm Bill being pushed by Republicans like Coleman (MN) that will allow farmers to collect subsidies even if they make $1.95 million/year, so I doubt there’s any chance that this talk of ending ethanol subsidies goes anywhere.

  4. I don’t think anything is THE answer.  But it’s for sure that corn-based ethanol isn’t.
